X-Men: Dark Phoenix Trailer – James McAvoy & Michael Fassbender face a new threat

2nd October 2018 By Tim Isaac

Synopsis: ‘In DARK PHOENIX, the X-MEN face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain.

‘With Jean spiralling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.

The Current War Trailer – Benedict Cumberbatch’s Thomas Edison wants electrical supremacy!

8th September 2017 By Tim Isaac

The Current War has been doing the round in Hollywood for over five years, but it’s only now that it’s gone in front of the camera. The first trailer for the film has now been release, featuring Benedict Cumberbatch as the legendary Thomas Edison.

The movie takes place in the late-1880s and revolves around power titans Edison and George Westinghouse’s as they battle over who will control the supply of electricity in the US. Edison championed direct current (DC) for electric power distribution over Westinghouse’s alternating current (AC), which was backed by several European companies and Westinghouse Electric. It became an increasingly vicious public battle as each side tried to destroy confidence in the other.

Michael Shannon plays Westinghouse, with Katherine Waterston, Tom Holland, Matthew Macfadyen, Tuppence Middleton, and Nicholas Hoult as Nikola Tesla. [Read more…]

Nicholas Hoult May Play J.R.R. Tolkien In A New Biopic

26th July 2017 By Tim Isaac

Most people know about Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit (at least from the film versions), but not that many people know much about the man behind Middle Earth, JRR Tolkien. The film world is trying to change that with a new biopic, which Deadline reports has Nicholas Hoult in the frame for the main role.

The film, ‘explores the formative years of the orphaned author as he finds friendship, love and artistic inspiration among a fellow group of outcasts at school. This takes him into the outbreak of World War I, which threatens to tear the “fellowship” apart. All of these experiences would inspire Tolkien to write his famous Middle-Earth novels.’

There may well be a reason they’re concentrating on his very early years, as while he was an interesting fellow later on, he also had a bit of a reputation as a dismissive grump, as well as being very anally retentive about certain things.

Finnish director Dome Karukoski, who hits cinemas soon with another biopic – about gay erotic artist Tom Of Finland – is set to direct from a script by David Gleeson and Stephen Beresford. It’s not known when the Tolkien movie might arrive in cinemas.

New Collide Trailer – Nicholas Hoult goes on the run from Anthony Hopkins

19th January 2017 By Tim Isaac

The first trailer for Collide arrived back last May, but there’s still no UK release date announced for the movie, which stars Nicholas Hoult and Anthony Hopkins. However, with a US release due in just over a month, a new promo has arrived, which you can watch below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘After a heist goes terribly wrong, Casey Stein (Nicholas Hoult) finds himself on the run from a ruthless gang headed by mob boss Hagen (Anthony Hopkins). Now Casey has precious cargo that belongs to Hagen, who will stop at nothing to retrieve it. Left with no choice, Casey calls his former employer and drug smuggler Geran (Ben Kingsley) to protect his long-time girlfriend Juliette before Hagen gets his hands on her. Equals (DVD Review)

2nd October 2016 By Tim Isaac

equals-slideStarring: Nicholas Hoult, Kristen Stewart, Guy Pearce
Directed By: Drake Doremus
Running Time: 101 mins
BBFC Certificate: 12
UK Release Date: October 3rd 2016

Our Score

Following a devastating war that has destroyed most of the Earth’s habitable surface, one of two remaining populations now lives in a sterile world, having completely suppressed and eradicated their emotions. However, sometimes the methods used to rid them of their primitive urges don’t work, and people end up with ‘Switched On Syndrome’, where their emotions begin to rise.

Silas (Nicholas Hoult) discovers that he is ‘infected’, and that he will eventually reach Stage 3, where he’ll be carted off and given a ‘death scenario’. He starts to fall for co-worker Nia (Kristen Stewart), who he discovers also has the ‘disease’ but is hiding it. They know that if their relationship is discovered there will be serious repercussions, but they cannot help but fall deeper in love.

It’s a potentially interesting premise, but Equals doesn’t live up to its potential. Too much of it doesn’t make sense, and there are far too many questions left unanswered. It’s particularly difficult not to notice these issues due to the fact that Equals moves so slowly. With its visually arresting imagery and quiet demeanour, it’s rather like a sci-fi short film that’s been stretched out over 100 minutes. However, it only has enough plot for about half an hour, and 90% of that plot is extremely predictable.

The whole thing feels like it needed to be developed more. There’s too little feel for what it’s like to live with no emotion, and the potentially fascinating idea of someone coming to have them for the first time isn’t handled in a genuine or logical way. I did wonder whether the film is striving towards a metaphor for gay people having to hide sexuality, particularly with an underground group of people with emotions that Silas discovers, but it never feels like it’s taken anywhere or that it’s gotten to grips with what it’s talking about. Like much of the rest of the movie, it ends up a hint towards something it doesn’t know what to do with.

Ultimately it’s a movie where everyone involved knows they’ve got a good idea, and they’ve spent an awful lot of time making that idea look good (on what was probably a fairly small budget). Sadly though, they’ve spent far less time ensuring the events and emotions are coherent and engaging. Hopefully one day someone can give it another go around with a little more thought, as there is plenty of potential. They can even bring Nicholas Hoult along, as he’s very good as Silas, but he’s generally better than everything that’s going on around him.

Overall Verdict: A great idea is turned into a rather dull slice of sci-fi, which stretches a small amount of predictable plot far past breaking point.
