X-Men: Dark Phoenix Trailer – James McAvoy & Michael Fassbender face a new threat

2nd October 2018 By Tim Isaac

Synopsis: ‘In DARK PHOENIX, the X-MEN face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain.

‘With Jean spiralling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.

Molly’s Game Trailer – Jessica Chastain stars in Aaron Sorkin’s feature directorial debut

15th August 2017 By Tim Isaac

Aaron Sorkin has had plenty of success with the likes of TV’s The West Wing and The Newsroom, as well as writing the screenplays for movies such as The Social Network and Steve Jobs. Now though he’s stepping behind the camera for the first time with Molly’s Game (which unsurprisingly he also wrote).

Here’s the synopsis: ‘MOLLY’S GAME is the true story of Molly Bloom a beautiful, young, Olympic-class skier who ran the world’s most exclusive high-stakes poker game for a decade before being arrested in the middle of the night by 17 FBI agents wielding automatic weapons. Her players included Hollywood royalty, sports stars, business titans and finally, unbeknownst to her, the Russian mob. Her only ally was her criminal defense lawyer Charlie Jaffey, who learned that there was much more to Molly than the tabloids led us to believe.’

Sorkin has been accused of misogyny throughout his career, with many particularly upset about the way female characters were treated in The Newsroom. As a result of that (and Sorkin’s rather arrogant response to concerns about how he writes women), many are eyeing Molly’s Game warily because of this, especially as it centre on a female character. We’ll be able to see just what the movie is like when it’s released towards the end of the year. [Read more…]

Jessica Chastain May Be The Villain In X-Men: Dark Phoenix, With Simon Kinberg Directing

14th June 2017 By Tim Isaac

Simon Kinberg has been involved with the X-Men franchise for a long time. He’s written most of the movies since The Last Stand, and been a producer on all the flms since First Class. Now he’s been confirmed to be be stepping behind the camera, as he will direct the upcoming X-Men: Dark Phoenix.

They’re also busy filling out the cast, with THR reporting that Jesica Chastain is in talk to play the villain.

X-Men: Apocalypse introduced us to a new version of Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), who we saw having an extreme power that she must keep contained. In the comic she became ‘imbued by a cosmic energy called the Phoenix Force. It eventually overtook her personality and made her bad, necessitating the X-Men to stop her.’ It’s not clear whether the film will bother with the ‘Phoenix Force’, as in a version of the storyline in The Last Stand, the almost uncontrollable ‘Phoenix’ was part of Jean’s mutant powers that she had to keep under control. Apocalypse suggested the new Jean Grey may be the same.

However it’s handled, Chastain ‘would play Lilandra, the empress of an alien empire called the Shi’ar, who leads the quest to imprison and execute Dark Phoenix, leading her into conflict with the X-Men.’

Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy and Nicholas Hoult are all expected to return.

Miss Sloane Trailer – Jessica Chastain fights for gun control

14th September 2016 By Tim Isaac

miss-sloane-jessica-chastainWhile much of the world finds it difficult to understand the US’s reluctance to enact gun control measures, it remains one of the most vexed issues in the country. However, Miss Sloane wants to take a look at some of the issues.

It shows you just how much of a divisive issue it is, that the official synopsis doesn’t mention gun control at all. It simply reads, ‘MISS SLOANE is the story a ruthless lobbyist (Jessica Chastain) who is notorious for her unparalleled talent and her desire to win at all costs, even when it puts her own career at risk. The thriller pulls back the curtain on how Capitol Hill games are played and won as Sloane faces off against the most influential powers in D.C.’

Despite the fact the synopsis rather hides it, what Chastain’s character it fighting for is a piece of legislation to ensure better background checks on people buying guns. The movie will be out in the US in December. [Read more…]

The Huntsman: Winter’s War (Blu-ray Review)

14th August 2016 By Tim Isaac

huntsman-winters-war-slideStarring: Chris Hemsworth, Emily Blunt, Charlize Theron, Jessica Chastain
Directed By: Cedric Nicolas-Troyan
Running Time: 120 mins
BBFC Certificate: 12
UK Release Date: August 15th 2016

Our Score

The Huntsman: Winter’s War was always going to have an uphill struggle with critics. Most of them didn’t particularly like the first film, Snow White And The Huntsman, and it was very difficult to see the point of making a follow-up. When Winter’s War arrived, it turned out not that many other people could see the point either, as it didn’t exactly set fire to the box office.

That’s almost a shame though, as the rubbish-ness of the first film is undoubtedly a drag on this movie and something it attempts to get around with only partial success. If this was standalone film without that millstone, and if a few structural issues were sorted out, it would have gotten a much reception. [Read more…]
