20th Century Women Trailer – Annette Bening, Greta Gerwig & Elle Fanning head for 1979

27th September 2016 By Tim Isaac

20th-century-womenMike Mills last film was the touching Beginners, about a man (Ewan McGregor) shocked by the revelation that his ageing father (Christopher Plummer) is gay. Now he’s back with 20th Century Women, which takes us back to the 1970s.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Written and directed by acclaimed writer and director Mike Mills (Beginners, Thumbsucker), and starring 4-time Academy Award® Nominee Annette Bening (The Kids Are All Right, American Beauty), Greta Gerwig (France Ha, Greenberg) and Elle Fanning (Maleficent, Super 8). 20th Century Women tells the story of three remarkable women, each from a different era of the 20th century, coming together to help teach a teenage boy about life and love, sex and freedom, men and women.  Set in Santa Barbara in the summer of 1979, filled with punk-rock verve, 20th Century Women takes a humorous and heartfelt look at how we figure out who we are.’

The movie premieres at the New York Film Festival this October, and should in UK cinemas next year. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Live By Night Trailer – Ben Affleck directs a Prohibition era crime thriller

10th September 2016 By Tim Isaac

live-by-night-poster1-slideBen Affleck has been working on bringing Live By Night to the big screen for around four years. Now it’s preparing for its release, with Affleck hoping it’ll be as well received as his last directorial effort, Argo.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Oscar winner Ben Affleck (“Argo”) directed and stars in the dramatic crime thriller “Live by Night.” Affleck also wrote the screenplay, based on the award-winning best-seller by Dennis Lehane; it marks the second collaboration for the fellow Boston natives, following the acclaimed drama “Gone Baby Gone.”

‘“Live by Night” is set in the roaring `20s when Prohibition hasn’t stopped the flow of booze in an underground network of gangster-run speakeasies. The opportunity to gain power and money is there for any man with enough ambition and nerve and Joe Coughlin, the son of the Boston Police Superintendent, long ago turned his back on his strict upbringing for the spoils of being an outlaw. But even among criminals there are rules and Joe breaks a big one: crossing a powerful mob boss by stealing his money and his moll. The fiery affair ends in tragedy, setting Joe on a path of revenge, ambition, romance and betrayal that propels him out of Boston and up the ladder of Tampa’s steamy rum-running underworld.

Starring with Affleck are Elle Fanning (“Maleficent”), Brendan Gleeson (“In the Heart of the Sea,” the “Harry Potter” films), Chris Messina (“Argo,” “The Mindy Project”), Sienna Miller (“American Sniper,” “Foxcatcher”), Zoe Saldana (“Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Avatar”), and Oscar winner Chris Cooper (“Adaptation,” “The Town”).’

The film will be in UK cinemas in January. [Read more…]

The Neon Demon Trailer – Nicolas Winding Refn teams with Elle Fanning, Jena Malone, Keanu Reeves & Christina Hendricks

14th April 2016 By Tim Isaac

neon-demon-pic1Nicolas Winding Refn has been working on Neon Demon for several years, but he’s been keeping details about the exact plot to himself. Even with this first trailer, things aren’t exactly made clear, but it does look rather intriguing.

IMDB says of the film, ‘When aspiring model Jesse moves to Los Angeles, her youth and vitality are devoured by a group of beauty-obsessed women who will take any means necessary to get what she has.’

Refn has previously said of the movie, “One morning I woke and realized I was both surrounded and dominated by women. Strangely, a sudden urge was planted in me to make a horror film about vicious beauty. After making Drive and falling madly in love with the electricity of Los Angeles, I knew I had to return to tell the story of The Neon Demon. This movie is a manifestation of the strong ties between us and will lead to many more adventures.”

The likes of Elle Fanning, Jena Malone, Keanu Reeves and Christina Hendricks star. [Read more…]

Trumbo (Cinema Review)

5th February 2016 By Chris Hallam

Directed By: Jay Roach
Running Time: 124 minutes
UK Release Date: February 5th 2016
BBFC Certificate: 15

Our Score

Dalton Trumbo (Brtan Cranston) was a hugely successful screenwriter of the 1940s, 50s and 60s. A family man and an eccentric in many ways, he did much of his best work writing in the bath. He was also a Communist and one of the notorious “Hollywood Ten” who were blacklisted throughout the 1950s.

With a few notable exceptions, such as Martin Ritt’s Woody Allen starrer The Front and, more recently, George Clooney’s Good Night, And Good Luck, there are very few films about the anti-Communist paranoia which consumed the United States after the Second World War. This is largely because Hollywood was hit particularly badly by it and only now as the last of the surviving few participants die off is it becoming a generally acceptable topic for filmmaking. It remains a touchy subject though. Many careers and lives were ruined. [Read more…]
