Our Score

Barry Seal (Tom Cruise) is working as a pilot for TWA in the late 70s when she’s spotted by CIA agent Monty ‘Schafer’ (Domhnall Gleeson). Schafer wants Barry to fly reconnaissance missions in Central America, where the Soviet Union is backing Communist militias. His success at that leads to missions where he acts of the CIA courier to General Noriega in Panama, as well as helping to arm the anti-Communist Nicaraguan Contras in Honduras.

All this leads him to some dodgy places, including into the sphere of the Medellin Cartel, who get Barry to help them smuggle drugs into the US on his return trips. The CIA turn a blind eye to his side job as long as he still gets results. However, not every US law enforcement agency is as keen to ignore Barry’s smuggling. [Read more…]

American Made (Cinema Review)

24th August 2017 By George Elcombe 1 Comment

Starring: Tom Cruise, Domhnall Gleeson, Sarah Wright
Directed By: Doug Liman
Running Time: 115 Minutes
UK Release Date: 25 August 2017
BBFC Certificate: 15

Our Score

Audiences seem to lap up ‘rise and fall’ movies, where an ambitious everyman answers the call to adventure and embarks on a journey that brings them wealth and power. But as The Notorious B.I.G song goes ‘the more money we come across, the more problems we see’ and that is definitely the case with this film.

American Made tells the ‘true story’ of Barry Seal (Tom Cruise), an airline pilot who is recruited by CIA agent Schafer (Domhnall Gleeson) to take aerial recognisance photos of communist insurgence in South America. That then leads to him smuggling drugs and guns for all sides during the late 70’s and early 80s. [Read more…]

Goodbye Christopher Robin Trailer – The story behind AA Milne and Winnie the Pooh

17th June 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It looks like Goodbye Christopher Robin will be one of the movies hoping for a bit of awards love at the end of the year, telling the true story behind the creation of Winnie The Pooh. Now the trailer for the movie has arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘GOODBYE CHRISTOPHER ROBIN gives a rare glimpse into the relationship between beloved children’s author A. A. Milne (Domhnall Gleeson) and his son Christopher Robin, whose toys inspired the magical world of Winnie the Pooh. Along with his mother Daphne (Margot Robbie), and his nanny Olive (Kelly Macdonald), Christopher Robin and his family are swept up in the international success of the books; the enchanting tales bringing hope and comfort to England after the First World War. But with the eyes of the world on Christopher Robin, what will the cost be to the family?

‘Additional cast includes Stephen Campbell Moore, Alex Lawther, Richard McCabe, Nico Mirallegro, Geraldine Somerville and Phoebe Waller-Bridge. The film is directed by Simon Curtis (WOMAN IN GOLD, MY WEEK WITH MARILYN) from a script written by Frank Cottrell-Boyce (RAILWAY MAN, MILLIONS) and Simon Vaughan (“War and Peace”). Damian Jones (ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS: THE MOVIE, THE LADY IN THE VAN) produced with Steve Christian (BELLE), and Curtis and Vaughan also served as executive producers.’

Domhnall Gleeson & Michelle Pfeiffer In Talks For Darren Aronofsky’s Next Film

18th April 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

domhnall-gleesonThe cast for Darren Aronofsky’s next movie is growing, with Variety reporting that Domhnall Gleeson, Brian Gleeson (who’s Domhnall’s brother), Michelle Pfeiffer and Ed Harris are in talks to join the currently untitled new movie.

They’d star alongside the previously cast Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem in the film, with ‘centers on a couple whose relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home and disrupt their tranquil existence’. There’s not too much more info on the plot or the roles that everyone will be playing.

The domestic drama is due to start shooting fairly soon, with a 2017 release being eyed.

Brooklyn (Blu-ray Review)

brooklyn-review-slideStarring: Saoirse Ronan, Emory Cohen, Jim Broadbent, Domhnall Gleeson, Julie Walters
Directed By: John Crowley
Running Time: 111 mins
BBFC Certificate: 12
UK Release Date: February 29th 2016

Our Score

If you want Oscar nominations, you need to put Domhnall Gleeson in your movie. He was in four films released in 2015 that got multiple nominations. Brooklyn was one of those movies (alongside Star Wars, The Revenant and Ex Machina), although he doesn’t show up until the second half.

Based on Colm Toibin’s book, Brooklyn is about young Irish woman Eilis (Saoirse Ronan), whose sister Rose and a priest have organised for her to have a new life in New York, where they believe she will have more opportunities. After a difficult crossing, Eilis starts a new job at a department store while living at a boarding house in Brooklyn, and begins training to be a bookkeeper. [Read more…]
