New Hotel Transylvania 3 – Adam Sandler’s vampire family are going on vacation

21st March 2018 By Tim Isaac

Quite often when filmmakers don’t know what to do with a sequel, they send the characters of vacation. Unfortunately that’s accompanied by a lack of ideas in the finished movie and a sense of desperation. Hopefully though, that won’t be the case with Hotel Transylvania 3.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In Sony Pictures Animation’s Hotel Transylvania 3: A Monster Vacation, join our favorite monster family as they embark on a vacation on a luxury monster cruise ship so Drac can take a summer vacation from providing everyone else’s vacation at the hotel. It’s smooth sailing for Drac’s Pack as the monsters indulge in all of the shipboard fun the cruise has to offer, from monster volleyball to exotic excursions, and catching up on their moon tans. But the dream vacation turns into a nightmare when Mavis realizes Drac has fallen for the mysterious captain of the ship, Ericka, who hides a dangerous secret that could destroy all of monsterkind.’

Hotel Transylvania 3 is due out in July. Take a look at the new trailer below.  [Read more…]

Hotel Transylvania 2 (DVD Review)

18th February 2016 By Tim Isaac

hotel-transylvania-2-slideStarring: Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Mel Brooks, Selena Gomez, Kevin James
Directed By: Genndy Tartakovsky
Running Time: 89 mins
BBFC Certificate: U
UK Release Date: February 15th 2016

Our Score

Hotel Transylvania was a far bigger success than many people expected. Indeed, even Sony Pictures appeared to be taken by surprise, but it didn’t take them long to decide a sequel was needed. That follow-up quickly takes us through the next few years of the story, which sees monsters and humans starting to get along better across the world.

Dracula’s daughter Mavis marries slacker boyfriend Jonathan and they have a child, Dennis. As Dennis is only half-vampire, it’s not clear whether he will end up being a monster or not, but Dracula is determined that before he’s five, his grandson will spout fangs, as he knows that otherwise he will remain human forever. Mavis meanwhile feels that if Dennis is indeed more human than monster, perhaps it would be better if they went to live in the ‘normal’ world. [Read more…]

The Cobbler (DVD Review)

2nd January 2016 By Tim Isaac

the-cobbler-slideStarring: Adam Sandler, Melonie Diaz, Steve Buscemi, Method Man, Dan Stevens
Directed By: Tom McCarthy
Running Time: 99 mins
BBFC Certificate: 12
UK Release Date: January 4th 2015 (UK)

Our Score

The Cobbler is not Adam Sandler in zany mood, but he’s not being 100% serious either. He certainly pulls things back from his usual performances and enters mumbling mode, which is admittedly more watchable than he often is. He is Max, a cobbler who is forced to use an old shoemaking machine when his newer one breaks. He discovers that the machine has magical properties, as he now has the ability to put on somebody else’s shoes and literally become them.

At first Max thinks he’s going to be able to have some fun with his powers (including a creepily rapey sequence involving a cameo from Dan Stevens and a woman in a shower), but he soon gets caught up in a tricky situation with a bunch of bad guys. Looking into the lives of his customers also makes his re-evaluate the attempts to save his neighbourhood, which he’d previously ignored, and so he sets out to use his powers to stop the baddies destroying everything.
