Johnny Depp Joins Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them Franchise

2nd November 2016 By Tim Isaac

johnny-deppWarner Bros. has revealed that Johnny Depp has signed up to appear in the Fantastic Beasts franchise. It appears they were hoping to keep the news a secret, but following the first press screenings of Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them, word slipped out that Depp has a small cameo. That caused Warner to confirm the news and let the world know he’d be getting a much largee role in the sequel.

Although there’s been no confirmation of what role Depp will be playing, hints and rumours suggest it’s Gellert Grindelwald, who Albus Dumbledore developed a close attachment to as a teen – with the future Hogwarts headmaster having a perhaps reciprocated crush on his friend – but then the latter went off and became an incredibly powerful dark wizard. It’s believed Grindelwald’s rise and eventual fall will be intrinsic to the currently planned five Fantastic Beasts movies.

Whether any sort of romantic attachment between Dumbledore and Grindelwald will be shown isn’t known, as in the Harry Potter books Albus doesn’t confirm they were anything more than friends, and says that as an adult he avoided Gellert until their final confrontation. However, we may discover there’s more to it than that.

The first Fantastic Beasts film is set in New York in 1926, which is around the time we know Grindelwald was starting his secretive rise to power in Europe. Director David Yates has confirmed the second movie will transfer the main action to Paris in the 1930s, which suggests it will be increasingly Grindelwald focused. We also know a young Dumbledore himself will show up in the sequels.

The first film in the franchise hits cinemas in mid-November.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Final Trailer – Plus news of a special fan event of new footage

28th September 2016 By Tim Isaac

fantastic-beasts-final-poster-slideAt one point, Deathly Hallows was the end. Now we’ve got a new Harry Potter play – Cursed Child – playing in London, and the imminent film spin-off, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, is on its way. The latter has now released its final trailer, which looks great – familiar enough to those who love everything Potter, while also promising something new.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne (“The Theory of Everything”) stars in the central role of wizarding world magizoologist Newt Scamander, under the direction of David Yates, who helmed the last four “Harry Potter” blockbusters.

‘“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” opens in 1926 as Newt Scamander has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incident were it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt’s fantastic beasts, which could spell trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds.’

It’s also been announced that fans Will Be Treated to a Special Preview of New Footage From the Film in IMAX, and Can Be Part of a Live Interactive Q & A With the Stars and Director. The worldwide fan event will kick off on Thursday, October 13th, at 8:30 p.m. GMT (3:30 p.m. EDT, 12:30 p.m. PDT) and simultaneously in major cities in the U.S. and internationally.

Take a look below for the trailer and more info on a the event. [Read more…]

Take a look at the rather cool Comic-Con trailer below, which certainly manages to keep the Harry Potter feel, while also adding in a few new things (including an odd touch of Pokemon Go). Personally, I can’t wait! [Read more…]

New Posters: Wonder Woman, Kong: Skull Island, LEGO Batman Movie, Fantastic Beasts & More

23rd July 2016 By Tim Isaac

kong-skull-island-poster-slideWith Comic-Con kicking off in Sand Diego, movie studios have been lining up to release new posters for their upcoming movies. That includes Wonder Woman, Kong: Skull Island, The LEGO Batman Movie, Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them, War Dogs and King Arthur.

All of those movies will be hoping to excite fanboys at the Californian event, and hopefully many of them will be releasing some trailer/footage for the rest of us too. First up though it’s the posters.

We’ve also posted the first official image from Kong: Skull Island, showing Tom Hiddleston and Brie Larson, alongside evidence that they’re going to be dealing with some ridiculously large apes. However, like earlier promos, Kong bones suggest this will deal with a species in decline, leaving King Kong as the last of his kind.

Take a look at the posters and pic below. [Read more…]

11th April 2016 By Tim Isaac

fantastic-beasts-slideIn case there was anyone who wasn’t aware that the upcoming Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them is a Harry Potter spin-off, this new trailer absolutely underlines the fact, as well as letting us know it’s a brand new story. There’s mention of Albus Dumbledore, muggles and Hogwarts, as well as the iconic Potter musical theme, but also a setting that’s clearly the America of the past.

Those who’ve been missing Potter will certainly find a few things to get excited about.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne (“The Theory of Everything”) stars in the central role of wizarding world magizoologist Newt Scamander, under the direction of David Yates, who helmed the last four “Harry Potter” blockbusters.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Trailer – Eddie Redmayne magics himself into the Harry Potter spin-off

15th December 2015 By Tim Isaac

fantastic-beasts-trailer-slideFor those who’ve been suffering major withdrawal symptoms since the last Harry Potter movie hit cinemas, hope is coming in the form of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, a spin-off set in the same magical world, but several decades before Harry went to Hogwarts. David Yates is once more directing, and to show us that things are indeed the same but different, the first trailer and official poster have arrived.

Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incident…were it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt’s fantastic beasts, which could spell trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds.

‘“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” also stars Katherine Waterston (“Steve Jobs,” “Inherent Vice”) as Tina; Tony Award winner Dan Fogler (“The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee”) as Jacob; Alison Sudol (“Dig,” “Transparent”) as Tina’s sister, Queenie; Ezra Miller (“Trainwreck”) as Credence; two-time Oscar nominee Samantha Morton (“In America,” “Sweet and Lowdown”) as Mary Lou; Oscar winner Jon Voight (“Coming Home,” TV’s “Ray Donovan”) as Henry Shaw, Sr.; Ron Perlman (the “Hellboy” films) as Gnarlack; Carmen Ejogo (“Selma”) as Seraphina; Jenn Murray (“Brooklyn”) as Chastity; young newcomer Faith Wood-Blagrove as Modesty; and Colin Farrell (“True Detective”) as Percival Graves.

‘The film marks the screenwriting debut of J.K. Rowling, whose beloved Harry Potter books were adapted into the top-grossing film franchise of all time. Her script was inspired by the Hogwarts textbook Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, written by her character Newt Scamander.’

It’s due in cinemas November 2016. [Read more…]
