Our Score

He may be in his 70s but Steven Spielberg shows no signs of slowing down. He managed to slot in The Post while simultaneously making Ready Player One, something most directors half his age wouldn’t even contemplate let alone succeed at.

The Post is a bit of an old school flick, set in the 1970s and telling the story of the Pentagon Papers, a leaked set of documents that revealed that while in public the military and government was still positive about the war in Vietnam, privately many felt that it was unwinnable and that official finding bore this out. The authorities from President Richard Nixon downwards unsurprisingly did’t want this made public, while the press felt it was imperative to publish it. [Read more…]

Ready Player One: Spielberg Sizzle Reel – Is the sci-fi the latest classic Spielberg adventure?

23rd January 2018 By Tim Isaac

Opening with clips of classic Spielberg movies from Jaws and Close Encounters to ET and Jurassic Park, this Sizzle Reel is certainly keen to position Ready Player One as the next great adventure in the director’s long and storied career. It certainly makes the whole thing look pretty intriguing.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The film is set in 2045, with the world on the brink of chaos and collapse. But the people have found salvation in the OASIS, an expansive virtual reality universe created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance). New Ready Player One Trailer – Steven Spielberg takes us into a sci-fi VR Oasis

10th December 2017 By Tim Isaac

Ready Player One is definitely one of the most intriguing movies of 2018 – a film packed to the brim with references to great films of the past – from King Kong to The Iron Giant to Back To The Future – directed by the great bearded one himself, Steven Spielberg. Now we can take a new look at the film, with a fresh trailer and poster.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The film is set in 2045, with the world on the brink of chaos and collapse. But the people have found salvation in the OASIS, an expansive virtual reality universe created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance). When Halliday dies, he leaves his immense fortune to the first person to find a digital Easter egg he has hidden somewhere in the OASIS, sparking a contest that grips the entire world. The Post Trailer – Meryl Streep & Tom Hanks star in Spielberg’s free press drama

8th November 2017 By Tim Isaac

Steven Spielberg may be about to turn 71, but he’s showing no signs of slowing down. Indeed, the current political situation (i.e. Trump), caused him to slot in an extra movie that will be out soon, even though he was already busy making the big budget sci-fi movie, Ready Player One.

That extra film is The Post, but despite the fact it seemed to come together very quickly, Spielberg still managed to pull together an impressive cast, including Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep, Sarah Paulson, Bob Odenkirk, Tracy Letts, Bradley Whitford, Bruce Greenwood, Matthew Rhys and Alison Brie.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In June 1971 The New York Times, the Washington Post and the nation’s major newspapers took a brave stand for freedom of speech and reported on the Pentagon Papers, the massive cover-up of government secrets that spanned four decades and four US Presidents.

‘At the time, the Post’s Katherine Graham (Streep) was still finding her footing as the country’s first female newspaper publisher, and Ben Bradlee (Hanks), the paper’s volatile, driven editor, was trying to enhance the stature of the struggling, local paper. Together, the two formed an unlikely team, as they were forced to come together and make the bold decision to support The New York Times and fight the Nixon Administration’s unprecedented attempt to restrict the first amendment.’

The Post will be released in UK Cinemas on January 19th, 2018. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Ready Player One Trailer – The Iron Giant & BTTF DeLorean appear in Steven Spielberg’s reference-heavy world

23rd July 2017 By Tim Isaac

Ready Player One is one of the more intriguing movies of 2018. Ernest Cline’s novel was packed with references to 80s and 90s culture and films, including much of the work of Steven Spielberg. So when the great bearded one announced he was going to direct a movie version, many were intruigued about how they’d incorporate references to films owned by a wide variety of companies – especially as Spielberg said he would be going easy on references to his own films.

Now we’ve got out first look at the movie, and the references are there, including the Back To The Future DeLorean, and The Iron Giant. The last of those Spielberg says is a major part of the movie. It does look pretty cool though, and more ambitious than anything we’ve seen from SPielberg for a while.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From filmmaker Steven Spielberg comes the science fiction action adventure “Ready Player One,” based on Ernest Cline’s bestseller of the same name.

‘Ready Player One is in cinemas March 30, 2018 and stars Tye Sheridan (“X-Men: Apocalypse,” “Mud”), Olivia Cooke (“Me and Earl and the Dying Girl,” “Bates Motel”), Ben Mendelsohn (“Rogue One – A Star Wars Story,” “Bloodline”) and T.J. Miller (“Deadpool,” “Silicon Valley”), with Simon Pegg (the “Star Trek” movies, the “Mission: Impossible” movies) and Oscar winner Mark Rylance (“Bridge of Spies,” upcoming “Dunkirk”).

‘The film is set in 2045, with the world on the brink of chaos and collapse.
