Our Score

Kenny Wells (Matthew McConaughey) comes from a prospecting family going back generations. However, by the 1980s looking for minerals has changed dramatically from the Gold Rush days, where it’s now controlled by big businesses, engineering, science and where billions of dollars are wagered on a claim paying off.

Due to a downturn in the economy, Kenny’s family business is in the gutter. He thinks he’s found his way back with a bit of a Hail Mary pass – a largely dismissed theory that there are huge reserves of gold in Indonesia. He teams up with the man who came up with the idea, Michael Acosta (Edgar Ramirez), and raises a small amount of funding – far less than they need – to try to get things started. [Read more…]

New War For The Planet Of The Apes Trailer – Caesar and the apes are taking over

16th May 2017 By Tim Isaac

Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes surprised many when it turned out to be a pretty good origin story. Then the franchise really upped the game with the excellent Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes. That means the next instalment, War Of The Planet Of The Apes, has a lot to live up to. And from the evidence of this new trailer, it might be a rather dark tale, but also one with plenty of action and intrgue.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In War for the Planet of the Apes, the third chapter of the critically acclaimed blockbuster franchise, Caesar and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel. After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet.’

Andy Serkis, Woody Harrelson, Steve Zahn and Toby Kebbell  star, with Matt Reeves directing. The film arrive in UK cinemas July 14th 2017. [Read more…]

War For The Planet Of The Apes – Caesar goes into battle for survival

11th December 2016 By Tim Isaac

Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes surprised many when it turned out to be a pretty good origin story. Then the franchise really upped the game with the excellent Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes. That means the next instalment, War Of The Planet Of The Apes, has a lot to live up to.

Now we can get our first taste with a trailer.

Warcraft: The Beginning (Blu-ray Review)

10th October 2016 By Tim Isaac

warcraft-slideStarring: Travis Fimmel, Paul Patton, Toby Kebbell, Ben Schnetzer, Ben Foster
Directed By: Duncan Jones
Running Time: 122 mins
BBFC Certificate: 12
UK Release Date: October 10th 2016 (UK)

Our Score

In the last few years, Hollywood has become increasingly obsessed with the fast-growing Chinese market. Warcraft: The Beginning is ample evidence as to why that is. The movie was a massive flop in the US, grossing less than $50 million there on a $160 million budget. However, it made over $220 million in China, meaning that instead of being one of the biggest box office disasters ever, they’re now thinking of making a sequel.

The disparity between the US and China reception of this movie is a bit difficult to explain. While American audiences certainly had a lot of choice this summer, it’s a surprise a few more didn’t choose this film, as it’s quite fun. [Read more…]

New Ben-Hur Trailer – The classic tale gets retold with Jack Huston & Toby Kebbell

14th June 2016 By Tim Isaac

ben-hur-slideI may be completely wrong, but I’m finding it difficult to believe this new take on the classic Ben-Hur is going to be a hit. Indeed, it’s difficult to see why they thought a new version was necessary or desired, or indeed the Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter’s Timur Bekmambetov was the man to helm it. Even so, it’s coming and a new trailer has now arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘BEN-HUR is the epic story of Judah Ben-Hur (Jack Huston), a prince falsely accused of treason by his adopted brother Messala (Toby Kebbell), an officer in the Roman army. Stripped of his title, separated from his family and the woman he loves (Nazanin Boniadi), Judah is forced into slavery. After years at sea, Judah returns to his homeland to seek revenge, but finds redemption. Based on Lew Wallace’s timeless novel, Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ. Also starring Morgan Freeman and Rodrigo Santoro.’

At least Toby Kebbell has suggested the homoerotic undertones between Messala and Ben-Hur may make it across into this new version, which were present in the 1950s take. The film will be in cinemas in August. [Read more…]
