King of Thieves (Cinema Review)

13th September 2018 By George Elcombe

Starring: Michael Caine, Tom Courtenay, Jim Broadbent, Ray Winstone
Directed By: James Marsh
Running Time: 108 Minutes
UK Release Date: 14 September 2018
BBFC Certificate: 15

Our Score

Director James Marsh certainly likes bringing stories based on real life events to the big screen. Following The Theory of Everything (2014) and The Mercy (2018), he brings us the heist caper King of Thieves, which is based on the infamous Hatton Garden safe deposit burglary back in 2015. That crime was already the subject of last year’s The Hatton Garden Job, starring Matthew Goode and Larry Lamb, but not it’s getting the Michael Caine treatment.

As with all films based on true stories liberties are taken with the source material in order to translate it to the audience as a piece of entertainment rather than a documentary, and unlike Marsh’s previous film, The Mercy, King of Thieves is a more humorous and light hearted affair. Going In Style (Blu-ray Review)

13th August 2017 By Tim Isaac

Starring: Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Alan Arkin, Matt Dillon, Christopher Lloyd
Directed By: Zach Braff
Running Time: 96 mins
BBFC Certificate: 12
UK Release Date: August 14th 2017

Our Score

As a feature film director, Scrubs star Zach Braff has previously helmed the quirky indie comedies Garden State and Wish I Were Here. He’s gone far more mainstream with Going In Style, a movie that could have perhaps benefitted from a quirkier spirit.

The movie is a remake of a 1979 film that starred George Burns, Art Carney and Lee Strasberg, who have here been replaced by Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Alan Arkin. The three men are lifelong friends whose old age is being put in jeopardy by shady corporate goings-on that are set to rob them of their pensions. [Read more…]

Going In Style Trailer – Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman & Alan Arkin go old man bank robbing

19th December 2016 By Tim Isaac

Bank robbing isn’t normally a good idea at the best of times, but when you’re all pensioners it’s probably best something to avoid altogether. However, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Alan Arkin obviously feel differently in the new movie, Going In Style.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Oscar winners Morgan Freeman (“Million Dollar Baby”), Michael Caine (“The Cider House Rules,” “Hannah and Her Sisters”) and Alan Arkin (“Little Miss Sunshine”) team up as lifelong buddies Willie, Joe and Al, who decide to buck retirement and step off the straight-and-narrow for the first time in their lives when their pension fund becomes a corporate casualty, in director Zach Braff’s comedy “Going in Style.”

‘Desperate to pay the bills and come through for their loved ones, the three risk it all by embarking on a daring bid to knock off the very bank that absconded with their money.

‘The film also stars two-time Oscar nominee Ann-Margret (“Tommy,” “Carnal Knowledge”) as Annie, a grocery cashier who’s been checking Al out in more ways than one. Joey King (“Wish I Was Here”) stars as Joe’s whip-smart granddaughter, Brooklyn; with Oscar nominee Matt Dillon (“Crash”) as FBI Agent Hamer; and Christopher Lloyd (“Back to the Future” trilogy) as the guys’ lodge buddy, Milton. John Ortiz (“Silver Linings Playbook”) also stars as Jesus, a man of unspecified credentials who agrees to show the guys the ropes, and Peter Serafinowicz (“Guardians of the Galaxy”) as Joe’s former son-in- law, Murphy, whose pot clinic connections may finally prove useful.

‘Zach Braff (“Garden State”) directs from a screenplay by Theodore Melfi (“St. Vincent”).’

The film will be in cinemas next April. [Read more…]
