King of Thieves (Cinema Review)

13th September 2018 By George Elcombe

Starring: Michael Caine, Tom Courtenay, Jim Broadbent, Ray Winstone
Directed By: James Marsh
Running Time: 108 Minutes
UK Release Date: 14 September 2018
BBFC Certificate: 15

Our Score

Director James Marsh certainly likes bringing stories based on real life events to the big screen. Following The Theory of Everything (2014) and The Mercy (2018), he brings us the heist caper King of Thieves, which is based on the infamous Hatton Garden safe deposit burglary back in 2015. That crime was already the subject of last year’s The Hatton Garden Job, starring Matthew Goode and Larry Lamb, but not it’s getting the Michael Caine treatment.

As with all films based on true stories liberties are taken with the source material in order to translate it to the audience as a piece of entertainment rather than a documentary, and unlike Marsh’s previous film, The Mercy, King of Thieves is a more humorous and light hearted affair. Anna and the Apocalypse Trailer – Zombie films meet the Christmas musical (yes, seriously)

10th September 2018 By Tim Isaac

A zombie Christmas musical sounds like a ridiculous idea that should never be attempted. However, Anna and the Apocalypse has been getting some better reviews than you might expect, with some saying its works as both a horror film and a musical, and it’s all pretty fun.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘When the zombie apocalypse hits the sleepy town of Little Haven – at Christmas – teenager Anna and her high school friends have to fight, sing and dance to survive, with the undead horde all around them. Teaming up with her best friend John, Anna has to fight her way through zombified snowmen, Santas, elves and Christmas shoppers to get across town to the high school, where they’ll be safe. But they soon discover that being a teenager is just as difficult as staying alive, even at the end of the world.’

The movie should be out in time for Christmas. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

New Halloween Trailer – Michael Myers is back terrifying Jamie Lee Curtis

5th September 2018 By Tim Isaac

Every so often Jamie Lee Curtis is convinced to return to the Halloween franchise – with mixed results. However, this time there’s a fair amount of interest in the new instalment, not just because of Curtis but because series creator John Carpenter is serving as a creative consultant and David Gordon Green (Pineapple Express, All The Real Girls, Stronger) is directing. He also co-wrote the script alongside Danny McBride.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Jamie Lee Curtis returns to her iconic role as Laurie Strode, who comes to her final confrontation with Michael Myers, the masked figure who has haunted her since she narrowly escaped his killing spree on Halloween night four decades ago.

Master of horror John Carpenter will executive produce and serve as creative consultant on this film, joining forces with cinema’s current leading producer of horror, Jason Blum (Get Out, Split, The Purge, Paranormal Activity).  Inspired by Carpenter’s classic, filmmakers David Gordon Green and Danny McBride crafted a story that carves a new path from the events in the landmark 1978 film, and Green also directs.’

The movie is due in cinemas on October 12th. Take a look at the new trailer below. [Read more…]

The Predator Trailer – The alien hunter is back & just as deadly

5th September 2018 By Tim Isaac

There have been a couple of attempts to reinvigorate the Predator franchise, whether it’s been getting them to battle Aliens or taking us to their planet in Robert Rodriguez’s Predators. Fox finally seemed to have given up on it, until Iron Man 3’s Shane Black rocked up with a new idea and suddenly, The Predator was in the works.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From the outer reaches of space to the small-town streets of suburbia, the hunt comes home in Shane Black’s explosive reinvention of the Predator series. Now, the universe’s most lethal hunters are stronger, smarter and deadlier than ever before, having genetically upgraded themselves with DNA from other species. When a young boy accidentally triggers their return to Earth, only a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers and a disgruntled science teacher can prevent the end of the human race.’

Black wrote the script and also directs, with Boyd Holbrook, Trevante Rhodes, Jacob Tremblay, Keegan-Michael Key, Olivia Munn, Sterling K. Brown, Alfie Allen, Thomas Jane, Augusto Aguilera, Jake Busey, and Yvonne Strahovski starring. The film will be in cinemas on September 12th. Take a look at the lastest trailer below. [Read more…]

New The Nutcracker And The Four Realms Trailer – Disney turns a classic ballet into an epic film fantasy

5th September 2018 By Tim Isaac

Most of Disney’s recent family-friendly live-action fantasies have been based on their animated movies (Beauty & The Beast, Maleficent, The Jungle Book). However, with The Nutcracker And The Four Realms, they’re relying on the popularity of Tchaikovsky’s classic ballet rather than their own back catalogue. But from the looks of this trailer they’re still giving it a massive fantasy treatment with a film that looks a little Narnia and a little Alice In Wonderland.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘All Clara (Mackenzie Foy) wants is a key – a one-of-a-kind key that will unlock a box that holds a priceless gift from her late mother. A golden thread, presented to her at godfather Drosselmeyer’s (Morgan Freeman) annual holiday party, leads her to the coveted key—which promptly disappears into a strange and mysterious parallel world. It’s there that Clara encounters a soldier named Phillip (Jayden Fowora-Knight), a gang of mice and the regents who preside over three Realms: Land of Snowflakes, Land of Flowers and Land of Sweets. Clara and Phillip must brave the ominous Fourth Realm, home to the tyrant Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren), to retrieve Clara’s key and hopefully return harmony to the unstable world. Starring Keira Knightley as the Sugar Plum Fairy and featuring a special performance by Misty Copeland, Disney’s new holiday feature film “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” is directed by Lasse Hallström and inspired by E.T.A. Hoffmann’s classic tale. In UK cinemas October 2018.’

The movie is due in UK cinemas November 2nd, 2018. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

New Johnny English Strikes Again Trailer – Rowan Atkinson returns as the bumbling secret agent

29th August 2018 By Tim Isaac

It seems that whenever Rowan Atkinson needs some money, he makes a Johnny English movie – as it’s not exactly like the world has been crying out for them. After the original in 2003 and a follow-up in 2011, a third film is now on its way.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘JOHNNY ENGLISH STRIKES AGAIN is the third installment of the Johnny English comedy series, with Rowan Atkinson returning as the much loved accidental secret agent. The new adventure begins when a cyber-attack reveals the identity of all active undercover agents in Britain, leaving Johnny English as the secret service’s last hope. Called out of retirement, English dives head first into action with the mission to find the mastermind hacker. As a man with few skills and analogue methods, Johnny English must overcome the challenges of modern technology to make this mission a success.’

Take a look at the new trailer below. Johnny English Strikes Again is released in UK cinemas on 5th October 2018. [Read more…]
