Three Billboards Outside Ebbings, Missouri Tops The Golden Globes

8th January 2018 By Tim Isaac

The headlines surrounding the Golden Globe Awards were understandably less about the movies and more about the statements against sexual harassment and gender inequality in the film industry made on the stage – and of course the almost all-black wardrobe choices. Although some had questioned whether there was any point to the black dresses while Hollywood was slapping itself on the back, the Globes turned out to be a good way of highlighting the issues – not least Best Director presenter Natalie Portman’s comment that it was an all-male shortlist.

Although the actual winners had to slightly take a backseat, it was Three Billboards Outside Ebbings, Missouri that was the biggest winner in the film categories, taking four awards. It picked up Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Screenplay, Best Actress for Frances McDormand and Best Supporting Actor for Sam Rockwell.

Lady Bird was named Best Picture Comedy or Musical, despite the fact its director, Greta Gerwig, wasn’t even nominated in the Best Director category. Lady Bird also saw Saoirse Ronan win Best Actress – Musical Or Comedy, while James Franco won Best Actor Comedy/Musical for The Disaster Artist. Best Actor – Drama went to Gary Oldman in The Darkest Hour.

It meant that one of the movies that’s been picking up numerous other awards this Oscar season – the gay-themed Call Me By Your Name – walked away with nothing. However, Call Me By Your Name wasn’t the only hotly tipped film to miss out, as Spielberg’s timely The Post all lost in all six categories it was nominated in.

Take a look at the full list of winners below.[bgpsadvert] [Read more…]

Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built Trailer – Helen Mirren plans to lock up ghosts!

7th January 2018 By Tim Isaac

Helen Mirren may not have been cast in the female reboot of Ghostbusters, but that’s not going to stop her trying to bust some ghosts – and get historical while doing it. She’s starring in Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built, which has just dropped a new trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Inspired by true events. On an isolated stretch of land 50 miles outside of San Francisco sits the most haunted house in the world. Built by Sarah Winchester (Academy Award®-winner Helen Mirren), heiress to the Winchester fortune, it is a house that knows no end. Constructed in an incessant twenty-four hour a day, seven day a week mania for decades, it stands seven stories tall and contains hundreds of rooms. To the outsider it looks like a monstrous monument to a disturbed woman’s madness. But Sarah is not building for herself, for her niece (Sarah Snook) or for the brilliant Doctor Eric Price (Jason Clarke) whom she has summoned to the house. She is building a prison, an asylum for hundreds of vengeful ghosts, and the most terrifying among them have a score to settle with the Winchesters…’

Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built is released in UK cinemas 2nd February 2018. Take a look at the new trailer below. [Read more…]

Ridley Scott May Take On Disney’s The Merlin Saga

7th January 2018 By Tim Isaac

Ridley Scott recently turned 80, but he’s showing no signs of slowing down. He released two movies in 2017 (Alien: Covenant and All The Money In The World), and now he’s lining up his next flick.

Variety reports that the current most likely contender is Disney’s The Merlin Saga, which Scott is in talks to direct. Although he hasn’t signed on the dotted line, sources suggest is will likely be his next movie.

The film will be based on T.A. Barron’s books, which follow ‘the origin story of a young Merlin who would go on to become the mentor of the classic literary character King Arthur.’

While several King Arthur movies have been in development all over Hollywood, and Guy Ritchie’s recent Arthurian film starring Charlie Hunnam failed, Disney still thinks it’s worth betting on. As well as The Merlin Saga, they’re also working on a live-action version of Sword In The Stone. Scott has apparently met the producers of that movie, which suggests they’re hoping the two can live alongside one another, perhaps building the sort of Arthurian franchise Ritchie was hoping for (but more magical).

Philippa Boyens, best known for co-writing many of Peter Jackson’s movies, including Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit, is set to pen the screenplay. It’s not known when we might see the movie.

Slender Man Trailer – The internet horror character is getting its own movie

4th January 2018 By Tim Isaac

In the past few years many strange things have emerged from the Internet. One of those things is Slender Man, who started life as part of a creepypasta story in 2009, before growing and morphing as other people brought new attributes and ideas to the horror character. It’s also got a bit too close to real life on a few occassions, not least when two 12-year-old girls stabbed someone 19 times and almost killed them in the hope of pleasing the fictional character.

Now though Slender Man is getting its own movie.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In a small town in Massachusetts, four high school girls perform a ritual in an attempt to debunk the lore of SLENDER MAN. When one of the girls goes mysteriously missing, they begin to suspect that she is, in fact, HIS latest victim.’

Take a look at the first trailer for the movie below. The film is due in cinemas May 18th. [Read more…]

New Death Wish Trailer – Bruce Willis stars in Eli Roth’s take on the Charles Bronson classic

4th January 2018 By Tim Isaac

Directed by Michael Winner and starring Charles Bronson, 1974’s Death Wish is one of the classic revenge thrillers, about a man who becomes a vigilante following the death of his wife. The movie spawned four sequels over the next 20 years.

Now it’s getting a reimagining, with Hostel and Cabin Fever helmer Eli Roth directing, and Bruce Willis in the starring role.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Dr. Paul Kersey (Bruce Willis) is a surgeon who only sees the aftermath of Chicago violence when it is rushed into his ER – until his wife (Elisabeth Shue) and college-age daughter (Camila Morrone) are viciously attacked in their suburban home. With the police overloaded with crimes, Paul, burning for revenge, hunts his family’s assailants to deliver justice. As the anonymous slayings of criminals grabs the media’s attention, the city wonders if this deadly vigilante is a guardian angel or a grim reaper.’
