Mowgli Trailer – Andy Serkis offers up a dark take on The Jungle Book

21st May 2018 By Tim Isaac

After the huge success of Disney’s live-action Jungle Book, many wondered how the planned Andy Serkis directed take of Rudyard Kipling’s tales was going to find its place. Well, it seems Warner Bros. has decided to leave a couple of years between the movies and to sell it as the darkest, most intense version of the story yet – as evidenced by the first trailer and featurette. There’s also a poster that looks oddly like it’s from a 1960s/1970s exploitation horror film.

Synopsis: ‘Motion capture and live action are blended for “Mowgli,” a new, big-screen, 3D adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s classic The Jungle Book. The film features an impressive roster of stars under the direction of Andy Serkis.

‘The story follows the upbringing of the human child Mowgli, raised by a wolf pack in the jungles of India. As he learns the often harsh rules of the jungle, under the tutelage of a bear named Baloo and a panther named Bagheera, Mowgli becomes accepted by the animals of the jungle as one of their own. All but one: the fearsome tiger Shere Khan. But there may be greater dangers lurking in the jungle, as Mowgli comes face to face with his human origins.

‘The actors performing the roles of the story’s central animal characters are: Oscar winner Christian Bale (“The Fighter,” the “Dark Knight” Trilogy) as the cunning panther, Bagheera; Oscar winner Cate Blanchett (“Blue Jasmine,” “The Aviator”) as the sinister snake, Kaa; Oscar nominee Benedict Cumberbatch (“The Imitation Game,” “Avengers: Infinity War”) as the fearsome tiger, Shere Khan; Oscar nominee Naomie Harris (“Moonlight,” “Skyfall”) as Nisha, the female wolf, who adopts the baby Mowgli as one of her cubs; and Andy Serkis (the “Planet of the Apes” trilogy, “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”) as the wise bear, Baloo. On the human side, Matthew Rhys (“The Post”) is Lockwood; Freida Pinto (“Knight of Cups”) is Messua; and young actor Rohan Chand (“The Hundred-Foot Journey,” “Bad Words”) will play Mowgli, the boy raised by wolves.’

The film is due in cinemas on October 19th. Take a look at the first trailer and poster below. [Read more…]

The Happytime Murders Trailer – Melissa McCarthy joins a grown-up puppet noir

20th May 2018 By Tim Isaac

For quite a few years The Jim Henson Company has been working on The Happytime Murders, but despite plans to shoot in 2010 and 2012, and stars likes Katherine Heigl, Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx linked to it at various times, the project remained stuck in development hell. Now though it’s in the can with Melissa McCarthy, and the first trailer has arrived to give us our first look at a movie that may have Henson style puppets, but certainly isn’t as family friendly as we’d usually expect.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘THE HAPPYTIME MURDERS is set in the underbelly of Los Angeles where puppets and humans coexist. Two clashing detectives, one human and one puppet, are forced to work together to try and solve who is brutally murdering the former cast of “The Happytime Gang,” a beloved classic puppet show.’

Joel McHale, Maya Rudolph and Elizabeth Banks also star. Take a look at the first trailer below. The movie will be in cinemas later this summer. [Read more…]

BlacKkKlansman Trailer – Spike Lee & Jordan Peele team for a true story

16th May 2018 By Tim Isaac

At its Cannes debut yesterday BlacKkKlansman was met with a rapturous response and a 10-minute standing ovation, with many saying Spike Lee’s movie captures the zeitgeist, using a true story from the past to talk about modern race issues and the bigotry of the Trump era.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From visionary filmmaker Spike Lee comes the incredible true story of an American hero. It’s the early 1970s, a time of great social upheaval as the struggle for civil rights rages on. Ron Stallworth (John David Washington) becomes the first African-American detective on the Colorado Springs Police Department, but his arrival is greeted with skepticism and open hostility by the department’s rank and file. Undaunted, Stallworth resolves to make a name for himself and a difference in his community. He bravely sets out on a dangerous mission: infiltrate and expose the Ku Klux Klan.

Posing as a racist extremist, Stallworth contacts the group and soon finds himself invited into its inner ‘circle. He even cultivates a relationship with the Klan’s Grand Wizard, David Duke (Topher Grace), who praises Ron’s commitment to the advancement of White America. With the undercover investigation growing ever more complex, Stallworth’s colleague, Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver), poses as Ron in face-to-face meetings with members of hate group, gaining insider’s knowledge of a deadly plot. Together, Stallworth and Zimmerman team up to take down the organization whose real aim is to sanitize its violent rhetoric to appeal to the mainstream.

‘Produced by the team behind the Academy-Award® winning Get Out, BlacKkKlansman offers an unflinching, true-life examination of race relations in 1970s America that is just as bracingly relevant in today’s tumultuous world.’

The film hits cinemas in August. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]
