While Marvel and DC haven’t generally felt the need to cast massive a-list stars as the leads for their interconnected universe of films (even Robert Downey Jr was on the b-list before Iron Man), it seems Universal thinks they need some real star power for the series of monster movies they’re planning. Tom Cruise is attached to a reboot of The Mummy, and now THR reports Johnny Depp is attached to play The Invisible Man.
Ed Solomon (Men in Black, Now You See Me) is writing the script for the film, with Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan overseeing the creation of the universe, which is also likely to include new takes on Dracula and Frankenstein. Over than that there’s very little info on what they plan to do with HG Wells’ classic story.
It’s previously been suggested The Mummy will be set in the present day, so there’s a good chance The Invisible Man will be brought into the modern era too. Universal’s classic 1933 version starred Claude Rains as a scientist who takes an experimental drug and becomes completely invisible. Presumably the new take will follow the same basic set-up.There’s no word on a director or release date.
