Journey’s End (Cinema Review)

1st February 2018 By Mike Martin

Starring: Sam Claflin, Paul Bettany, Asa Butterfield, Stephen Graham, Toby Jones, Tom Sturridge, Robert Glenister
Director: Saul Dibb
Running time: 107 mins
BBFC Certificate: 12A

Our Score

In 2014 the 100th anniversary of WWI began, and since then we’ve had a plethora of films, documentaries, tributes and dramas about the Great War. Most have been excellent, some middling, but it’s an exhaustive list, and some would say exhausting. However, this version of RC Sherriff’s play deserves to be seen, tired as you may be with war films. It’s released to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the 1918 spring offensive, and is a noble addition to the list of films dealing with the great conflict.

It’s a version of Sherriff’s play that sticks to the script – for the most part. There are some added four-letter words which he never wrote, and which add little to the power of the piece. Meanwhile some lines about cricket, Alice in Wonderland and drinking have been cut. However it conveys, like the play and the fine 1988 TV film, the regimen of the men on the front, the nervousness, the routine, sometimes the boredom, and certainly the sheer terror of being in a trench 60 yards away from the German fortifications – “the width of a rugby field”. Journey’s End Trailer – Sam Claflin & Asa Butterfield star in the classic World War I tale

23rd October 2017 By Tim Isaac

Synopsis: ‘Based on RC Sherriff’s play and novel of the same name JOURNEY’S END is set in March 1918 as C-Company, led by a war-weary Captain Stanhope (Sam Claflin) arrives in northern France to take its turn in the front-line trenches. Told that a German offensive is imminent Stanhope drowns his fears in whisky whilst the officers (Paul Bettany, Stephen Graham, Tom Sturridge) and their cook (Toby Jones) attempt to distract themselves in their dugout with talk of food and life before war.

‘They are joined by Raleigh (Asa Butterfield), a young new officer fresh out of training excited about his first real posting, and a chance to serve under Stanhope. Raleigh’s naivety serves as a stark contrast to the other men’s impending fear as the tension rises and the attack draws ever closer.’

Saul Dibb (Suite Française, The Duchess) directs the movie, which will arrive in UK cinemas February 2nd 2018. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Atomic Blonde Trailer – Charlize Theron turns bisexual badass at the end of the Cold War

11th March 2017 By Tim Isaac

Every so often, Charlize Theron wants to kick ass, or that’s how it seems. Whether it’s Aeon Flux, Fury Road or now Atomic Blonde, she is good at taking names and looking badass doing it. In Atomic Blonde. based on Antony Johnston’s graphic novel The Coldest Winter, that involves her beating up a lot of men, and getting sexy with a female French operative.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The crown jewel of Her Majesty’s Secret Intelligence Service, Agent Lorraine Broughton (Oscar® winner Charlize Theron) is equal parts spycraft, sensuality and savagery, willing to deploy any of her skills to stay alive on her impossible mission. Sent alone into Berlin to deliver a priceless dossier out of the destabilized city, she partners with embedded station chief David Percival (James McAvoy) to navigate her way through the deadliest game of spies.

‘A blistering blend of sleek action, gritty sexuality and dazzling style, Atomic Blonde is directed by David Leitch (John Wick, upcoming Deadpool 2). Also starring John Goodman, Til Schweiger, Eddie Marsan, Sofia Boutella and Toby Jones, the film is based on the Oni Press graphic novel “The Coldest City,” by Antony Johnston & illustrator Sam Hart. Toby Jones & Rafe Spall Up For Jurassic World 2

9th November 2016 By Tim Isaac

rafe-spallIt looks like the follow-up to the mega-hit Jurassic World is getting a bit of a British infusion, as Variety reports that Toby Jones and Rafe Spall are in talks to join the movie. While there have been no details about the plot of the movie, as they are both from the UK, it’s difficult not to speculate whether they will be relative of Jurassic Park’s founder, John Hammond, originally played by the late Richard Attenborough.

Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are both due to return for the sequel, and it’s likely they’ll soon be joined by Spall, Jones, as well as two other actors the producers are currently testing for. J.A. Bayona is set to direct, from a script by Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly.

Toby Jones is known for roles such as Dr. Arnim Zola in Captain America, Claudius Templesmith in The Hunger Games and David Pilcher in Wayward Pine. Rafe Spall meanwhile is known for Prometheus, Wife Of Pi and I Want It A Year.
