Jack O’Connell To Play Alexander McQueen In Andrew Haigh’s Biopic

25th October 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jack-oconnell-shirtlessBack in January it was revealed that Weekend and Looking helmer Andrew Haigh was working on a biopic of legendary fashion designer Alexander McQueen. Now he’s found the man to play the central role, with THR reporting that Unbroken and Money Monster’s Jack O’Connell has signed on.

McQueen had a meteoric rise as a fashion designer, becoming renowned as one of the best in Britain by his early 20s, with his immaculate tailoring shocking, surprising and delighting fashion watchers in equal measure. He became one of the go-to designers for the hip and trendy, making outfits for David Bowie tours and working with Bjork (including directing the video for Alarm Call). He was appointed the head designer for Givenchy before launching his own successful label.

However, he also had issues with drug dependence and depression, and while he was openly gay (he said he knew he was gay when he was six and came out in his teens) he struggled to maintain relationships. He tragically committed suicide when he was just 40 years old, only days after his mother died of cancer.

The film will ‘explore the creative process of McQueen – who passed away in 2010 – in the months leading up to one of his greatest shows in 2009, providing an intimate portrait of the man behind the global brand.’

Chris Urch has written the script, based on Blood Beneath the Skin by Andrew Wilson. The current plan is to start shooting in January, with the hope it will be ready by the end of 2017 (and therefore a prime Oscar release slot).

Our Score

Lee Gates (George Clooney) presents the TV show Money Monster, a programme that tries to make stocks, shares and investments a bit more entertaining. His latest broadcast quickly takes an unexpected turn when a man (Jack O’Connell) bursts into the studio brandishing a gun and forces Lee to put on an explosive vest.

The man, who it’s revealed is called Kyle, is an average joe who’s been sent over the edge by the fact that a few weeks before Lee told people they should invest in a company called IBIS. However, while Lee said it was safer than a savings account, the share price has collapsed due to what the company said was a glitch in its trading algorithm, and Kyle has lost every penny he’s got. Kyle wants answers and thinks Lee should be the one who gets them for him. With the help of his producer, Patty (Julia Roberts), talking to him from the gallery, Lee attempts to keep Kyle calm while they figure out what’s going on. [Read more…]

Search For The Young Han Solo Narrows To The Likes Of Alden Ehrenreich, Jack Reynor & Taron Egerton

15th March 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

egerton-reynor-ehrenreichThe search for the actor who will play young Han Solo in the planned Star Wars spin-off that will focus on the characters’ early days continues to narrow. Back in January it was said the likes of Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Dave Franco, Logan Lerman, Jack Reynor, Scott Eastwood, Emory Cohen, and Blake Jenner were on the shortlist.

Things seem to have shifted to some new names, with THR reporting that at screen tests in London last weekend were the likes of Alden Ehrenreich (Hail, Caesar!); Jack Reynor (Transformers: Age of Extinction), Taron Egerton (Kingsman), and Emory Cohen (Brooklyn). Other names are also believed to still be in the mix, with Variety adding Blake Jenner (Everybody Wants Some!!) and Jack O’Connell (Unbroken).

Previous reports have suggested that while the movie isn’t expected to go into production until January 2017 (for a release May 25, 2018), the reason that they want to find their man now is because of a planned cameo in this year’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which is also set before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (21 Jump Street, The Lego Movie) are set to direct the Han Solo flick.

A decision on who will get the role is expected very soon.

Money Monster Trailer – George Clooney & Julia Roberts are taken hostage by Jack O’Connell

13th January 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

money-monster-trailer-slideGeorge Clooney and Julia Roberts are teaming up again for the drama/thriller Money Monster, and they’re bringing on Jack O’Connell for the ride. And as this is Clooney, you shouldn’t be too surprised that the movie tries to mix entertainment with a few social issues.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In the taut and tense thriller Money Monster, Lee Gates (George Clooney) is a bombastic TV personality whose popular financial network show has made him the money wiz of Wall Street. But after he hawks a high tech stock that mysteriously crashes, an irate investor (Jack O’Connell) takes Gates, his crew, and his ace producer Patty Fenn (Julia Roberts) hostage live on air. Unfolding in real time, Gates and Fenn must find a way to keep themselves alive while simultaneously uncovering the truth behind a tangle of big money lies.’

The film will be out in the US in March, but won’t reach the UK until May. Take a look at the first trailer below. [Read more…]
