Benedict Cumberbatch & Jake Gyllenhaal Are Headed To Rio

12th May 2017 By Tim Isaac

A Bigger Splash helmer Luca Guadagnino got massive plaudits and talk of a breakout hit at Sundance when his upcoming movie Call Me By Your Name debuted. He’s also finishing up the long-gestating remake of Suspiria.

However, for his next film, it looks like he’s heading to South America with Benedict Cumberbatch and Jake Gyllenhaal, as Variety reports they’re in talks to star in Guadagnino’s Rio. The movie is about, ‘a financial reporter (Gyllenhaal) who travels to Rio de Janeiro to visit a wealthy friend (Cumberbatch), only to get sucked into a plot to fake his friend’s death.’

It’s not clear when the movie will shoot, but the film will be looking for buyers at Cannes. As Guadagnino’s Suspiria isn’t released until 2017, don’t expect it until 2018 at least.

First Look At Benedict Cumberbatch As Thomas Edison In The Current War

23rd January 2017 By Tim Isaac

The Current War has been doing the round in Hollywood for over five years, but it’s only now that it’s going in front of the camera. To mark the start of production, the first image from the movie has been released via Entertainment Tonight, featuring Benedict Cumberbatch as the legendary Thomas Edison.

The movie takes place in the late-1880s and revolves around power titans Edison and George Westinghouse’s as the battle over who will control the supply of electricity. Edison championed direct current (DC) for electric power distribution over Westinghouse’s alternating current (AC), which was backed by several European companies and Westinghouse Electric. It became an increasingly vicious public battle as each side tried to destroy confidence in the other.

Michael Shannon play Westinghouse, Katherine Waterston, Tom Holland, Matthew Macfadyen, Tuppence Middleton, and Nicholas Hoult as Nikola Tesla.

Our Score

Here we are with the 14th film in the ever expanding and ultra-successful MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). This entry has been touted to be a turning point in the series, just as Thor (2011) introduced aliens and the nine realms; Doctor Strange introduces the Marvel multiverse – a key narrative trope of the comics which essentially means there are infinite versions of worlds and characters just ripe for the picking.

This long awaited entry tells the story of the brilliant but arrogant Doctor Stephen Strange (a well-cast Benedict Cumberbatch), who after a car accident suffers severe nerve damage in his hands. He goes on a journey to heal himself which leads to a temple in Nepal, where he meets The Ancient One (Tilda Swinton), learns of the mystic arts and sorcery, and is put on a path to save the day from a being that threatens the entire planet. New Doctor Strange Poster Arrives, Featuring Benedict Cumberbatch

10th September 2016 By Tim Isaac

doctor-strange-payoff-posterWe’ve got one more major superhero to wait for this year, with Marvel introducing a new character in Doctor Strange. The Studio has released a new poster, which you can see above, along with the news that its UK release has been moved up a few days to October 25th.

Cumberbatch plays Stephen Vincent Strange, a former neurosurgeon who becomes the next Sorcerer Supreme and primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats. Tilda Swinton will play Strange’s mentor, the Ancient One, while Chiwetel Ejiofor will appear as Baron Mordo, who also studies magic under the Ancient One, before becoming Doctor Strange’s nemesis. Mads Mikelsen is also onboard to play one of the main villains, while Rachel McAdams is Christine Palmer.

It’ll be interesting to see whether Marvel continues its incredibly successful run. The trailer certainly suggested it could be an interesting film, with the makers also saying this is one that needs to be seen in 3D.

24th July 2016 By Tim Isaac

DOCTOR-STRANGE-PAYOFF-POSTER-slideIf this trailer is anything to go by, Marvel is meeting Inception with Doctor Strange, and Benedict Cumberbatch is going to have a slightly odd American accent. It does look pretty cool – if strange – though.
