Under the Silver Lake Trailer – Andrew Garfield gets into a neo-noir mystery

21st March 2018 By Tim Isaac

The supernatural horror It Follows got writer/director David Robert Mitchell plenty of attention, and also ensured his next movie was going to be bigger budget with a better known cast. That follow-up is Under The Silver Lake, which stars Andrew Garfield, Riley Keough and Topher Grace.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From the dazzling imagination that brought you It Follows comes a delirious neonoir fever dream about one man’s search for the truth behind the mysterious crimes, murders and disappearances in his East L.A. neighborhood. Sam (Andrew Garfield) is a disenchanted 33-year-old who discovers a mysterious woman, Sarah (Riley Keough), frolicking in his apartment’s swimming pool. When she vanishes, Sam embarks on a surreal quest across Los Angeles to decode the secret behind her disappearance, leading him into the murkiest depths of mystery, scandal and conspiracy in the City of Angels.’

The film will be out in the US in June, but no UK date is currently set. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Breathe Trailer – Love conquers adversity for Andrew Garfield in Andy Serkis’ directorial debut

2nd July 2017 By Tim Isaac

Synopsis: ‘Andy Serkis (Jungle Book, Star Wars: The Force Awakens) makes his feature directorial debut with BREATHE. Based on a script by twice Academy Award-nominated writer William Nicholson (Everest, Les Misérables and Gladiator), BREATHE is an inspirational true story of love without limits.

‘Adventurous and charismatic, Robin Cavendish (Andrew Garfield – Hacksaw Ridge, Silence) has his whole life ahead of him when he is paralysed by polio whilst in Africa. Against all advice, Robin’s wife Diana (Claire Foy – Golden Globe Winner, The Crown, Wolf Hall) brings him home from hospital where her devotion and witty determination transcends his disability. Together they refuse to be imprisoned by his suffering; dazzling others with their humour, courage and lust for life. BREATHE is a heart-warming and highly emotional celebration of bravery and human possibility, a love story about living every breath as though it’s your last.

‘Based on the true story of producer Jonathan Cavendish’s own parents, BREATHE shows how Robin’s handling of and reaction to his illness had a huge impact on mobility and access for the disabled.

‘The film’s supporting cast members include Hugh Bonneville (Paddington and Downton Abbey) and Tom Hollander (Jungle Book and The Night Manager) as Robin’s devoted, long-time friends. Stephen Mangan (Rush) and acting legend Dame Diana Rigg (Game of Thrones, the original The Avengers) complete the cast with a soundtrack by the acclaimed composer Nitin Sawhney.

‘The film is produced by Jonathan Cavendish (Bridget Jones’s Diary) for The Imaginarium Studios. Financing is from Silver Reel, BBC Films and the BFI, brokered by Embankment Films.

‘STXinternational release the film across the UK and Ireland on 27th October.’ [Read more…]

Silence Trailer – Plus a poster for Martin Scorsese’s drama starring Andrew Garfield & Liam Neeson

23rd November 2016 By Tim Isaac

silence-poster-slideMartin Scorsese has been attached to Silence for years. However he kept putting it back, to the point where it briefly ended up in court as some of the backers felt he was essentially preventing it from actually getting made by never getting round to making it, but keeping himself attached to helm.

That was sorted out and Scorsese has now filmed the movie, based on Shusaku Endo’s novel. Set in the 17th Century, the story follows Father Rodrigues (Andrew Garfield), a Portuguese Jesuit priest who travels to Japan to confront his mentor, after rumours surface that he has abandoned the church. Ken Watanabe will portray Father Rodrigues’ Japanese interpreter, while Liam Neeson, Issei Ogata and Adam Driver also star.

The movie is getting an Oscar-qualifying run in the US in December, before expanding in January. It’ll be out in the UK early next year. [Read more…]

Hacksaw Ridge Trailer – Andrew Garfield stars in Mel Gibson’s return as a director

28th July 2016 By Tim Isaac

hacksaw-ridgeMany thought that after his last set of outbursts a few years ago, Mel Gibson had blown it so badly that he’d never be allowed on a film set again. However, he’s has a few small movie roles, and is now returning to the director’s chair with Hacksaw Ridge, 10 years after his last outing behind the camera, Apocalypto.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘HACKSAW RIDGE is the extraordinary true story of Desmond Doss [Andrew Garfield] who, in Okinawa during the bloodiest battle of WWII, saved 75 men without firing or carrying a gun. He was the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon, as he believed that while the war was justified, killing was nevertheless wrong. As an army medic, he single-handedly evacuated the wounded from behind enemy lines, braved fire while tending to soldiers and was wounded by a grenade and hit by snipers. Doss was the first conscientious objector awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.’

The movie will be out towards the end of the year. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

99 Homes (Blu-ray Review)

25th January 2016 By Tim Isaac

99-Homes-slideStarring: Andrew Garfield, Michael Shannon, Laura Dern, Clancy Brown
Directed By: Ramin Bahrani
Running Time: 112 mins
BBFC Certificate: 15
UK Release Date: January 25th 2016 (UK)

Our Score

After he can’t get paid for a construction job and ends up unemployed, single father Dennis Nash (Andrew Garfield) gets behind on his mortgage and ends up being evicted by Rick Carver (Michael Shannon), a man for whom the human cost of taking people’s homes isn’t as important as the amount of money he can make. However, after an angry Nash goes to Carver’s company hoping to reclaim tools he believes have been stolen, he ends up getting employed by Rick.

Initially he thinks he’s just going to help with clearances after the people have been thrown out of their house, but as he gets deeper into Carver’s world, he becomes involved in a web of morally bankrupt real-estate scams and downright theft, taking advantage of both normal people and the government. Conflicted about what he’s doing he keeps his new role secret from his child and mother (Laura Dern), but he cannot keep it under wraps forever, especially once he starts evicting people who never had a chance to pay back their loans.
