So we can cover as many films as possible, we thought we’d give you these quick updates of some of the smaller film announcements…
We reported in early December that rumours were floating around that Zombieland writers, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, were being lined up by Fox to write their X-Men spin-off Deadpool, which will see Ryan Reynolds explanding on the wise-cracking character he played in Wolverine. That news has now been official confirmed, with the duo officially signing on to write the Deadpool screenplay. At the moment there’s no timetable for when we might see the movie, with Reynolds currently busy preparing to shoot the Green Lantern, which starts filming next month. It’s also been promised the Deadpool film will stick closer to the character as he appears in the comics than Wolverine did. (Source: Variety)
The comic book movie, Cowboys & Aliens, has been in development for a long time now, with Iron Man’s Jon Favreau attached to direct and Robert Downey Jr. set to star. The film is about how warring cowboys and Native Americans come together to fight a common foe – aliens – when a spaceship crash lands on a wild west town. New reports suggest that things are now steaming ahead on the film, with plans to start filming the movie this July. It’s also being suggested that following the success of Avatar, it could be Favreau’s first foray into 3D, especially as Hollywood has started worrying audiences are soon going to expect major tentpole release to be in three-dimensions. Has Steven Soderbergh made a secret film? Current rumours suggest he might have. The Ocean’s 11 helmer was in Australia at the end of last year to direct a stage play he wrote called Tot Mum, and it seems he may have taken the time while over there to shoot what Tot Mom cast member Rhys Muldoon describes as a “pretty much improvised film”. However at the moment there are no other details on the film, including what it might be about. With most directors the idea of them shooting a completely unknown, improvised movie would be ridiculous, but not with Soderbergh. Both Bubble and The Girlfriend Experience were pretty much down & dirty improvised film that took virtually no time to make and cost very little, so it’s certainly more than possible Steven did make the movie and did it so cheaply that no word about it leaked out.
