Brooklyn (Cinema Review) – Saoirse Ronan goes from Ireland to New York

6th November 2015 By Mike Martin

brooklyn-review-slideStrarring: Saoirse Ronan, Domhnall Gleeson, Michael Zegen, Julie Walters
Director: John Crowley
Running Time: 112mins
UK Certificate: 12A

Our Score

Colm Toibin’s novel about an Irish girl finding her feet in New York has been much admired, but I found it a little underpowered. Nick Hornby’s adaptation suffers from similar problems, namely that not an awful lot happens, and when it does it’s so understated as to be almost invisible.

One thing that is undeniable is Ronan’s performance as Eilis Lacey; a sweet, honest, nice girl who has to suddenly cope with being the breadwinner of her family. Ronan is not the town’s glamour puss, or even pretty, but her puffy face, with piercing, honest eyes, is a wonder to behold. She is always sympathetic, completely real and without her the film would be even more paper thin. Eilis lives in a stifling, suffocating Irish town in the 1950s, where buying shoe polish on a Sunday is seen as an evil sin. All the boys look the same, with their oiled hair and rugby blazers, so it is a relief when she is picked as the member of the family to go to Brooklyn to find a new life. [Read more…]

New Secret in Their Eyes Trailer – Chiwetel Ejiofor & Julia Roberts are looking for a killer

6th November 2015 By Tim Isaac

Secret-in-Their-Eyes-slideShortly after the 2009 Argentinian movie The Secret in Their Eyes won the Best Foreign Language Oscar there was a lot of talk on making an English-language version. It’s taken a while but now it’s on its way, with Chiwetel Ejiofor in the lead role, alongside Julia Roberts and Nicole Kidman.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A tight-knit team of rising FBI investigators – Ray (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and Jess (Julia Roberts), along with their District Attorney supervisor Claire (Nicole Kidman) – is suddenly torn apart when they discover that Jess’s teenage daughter has been brutally and inexplicably murdered.

Now, thirteen years later, after obsessively searching every day for the elusive killer, Ray finally uncovers a new lead that he’s certain can permanently resolve the case, nail the vicious murderer, and bring long-desired closure to his team. No one is prepared, however, for the shocking, unspeakable secret that will reveal the enduring, destructive effects of personal vengeance on the human soul.

‘Interweaving past and present, this deeply layered mystery explores the murky boundaries between justice and revenge, and asks the question: how far would you go to right an unfathomable wrong?’

The movie’s due out later this year. [Read more…]

hateful-eight-slideSynopsis: In THE HATEFUL EIGHT, set six or eight or twelve years after the Civil War, a stagecoach hurtles through the wintry Wyoming landscape. The passengers, bounty hunter John Ruth (Russell) and his fugitive Daisy Domergue (Leigh), race towards the town of Red Rock where Ruth, known in these parts as “The Hangman,” will bring Domergue to justice.

Along the road, they encounter two strangers: Major Marquis Warren (Jackson), a black former union soldier turned infamous bounty hunter, and Chris Mannix (Goggins), a southern renegade who claims to be the town’s new Sheriff. Losing their lead on the blizzard, Ruth, Domergue, Warren and Mannix seek refuge at Minnie’s Haberdashery, a stagecoach stopover on a mountain pass. When they arrive at Minnie’s, they are greeted not by the proprietor but by four unfamiliar faces.

Bob (Bichir), who’s taking care of Minnie’s while she’s visiting her mother, is holed up with Oswaldo Mobray (Roth), the hangman of Red Rock, cow-puncher Joe Gage (Madsen), and Confederate General Sanford Smithers (Dern). 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi Trailer & Poster – Michael Bay takes on dramatic real-life events

4th November 2015 By Tim Isaac

Many people still aren’t sure that action-kingpin Michael Bay is the best man to take on the real-life events that took place in Benghazi and resulted in the death of the US ambassador. However, he’ll be hoping to prove naysayers wrong with 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi.

The film, which stars John Krasinski, Dominic Fumusa, James Badge Dale, Max Martini and Pablo Schreiber, now has a new trailer and poster , which you can watch below.

The movie is based on Mitchell Zuckoff’s book, which centres on six members of a security team. After the facility came under attack from militants angered about the recently release of a trailer for an Islam-bashing film called ‘Innocence Of Muslims’ and the anniversary of 9/11. The team fought to defend the lives of the Americans in the compound, although the attack claimed the life of US Ambassador Christopher J. Stevens and a foreign service worker, while two contract workers died in a second attack at a nearby CIA facility.

It’ll be in UK cinemas on January 29th.
