Kubo is a young boy, living secluded with his mother inside a mountain. Each day he goes to the nearby village and tells stories, using his magic to enact them to the villagers with moving origami figures. He tells the story of his heroic father, who was killed trying to save Kubo from his evil grandfather, the Moon King. Kubo lost an eye in the attack, but he and his mother managed to escape.

Kubo’s mother has told him there is one big rule – he must be home before darkness falls. However, while trying to honour his dead father the sun goes down and he comes under attack from his aunts. His mother uses the last magic to get Kubo to safety, telling him that his only way to protect himself is to find three magical pieces of armour that will make him nearly invulnerable. With his mother gone, Kubo’s only protection comes from Monkey, a charm that his mother brought to life as part of her final act, as well as Beetle, a man-size warrior bug they come across, who’s had his memory erased. The Huntsman: Winter’s War (Blu-ray Review)

14th August 2016 By Tim Isaac

huntsman-winters-war-slideStarring: Chris Hemsworth, Emily Blunt, Charlize Theron, Jessica Chastain
Directed By: Cedric Nicolas-Troyan
Running Time: 120 mins
BBFC Certificate: 12
UK Release Date: August 15th 2016

Our Score

The Huntsman: Winter’s War was always going to have an uphill struggle with critics. Most of them didn’t particularly like the first film, Snow White And The Huntsman, and it was very difficult to see the point of making a follow-up. When Winter’s War arrived, it turned out not that many other people could see the point either, as it didn’t exactly set fire to the box office.

That’s almost a shame though, as the rubbish-ness of the first film is undoubtedly a drag on this movie and something it attempts to get around with only partial success. If this was standalone film without that millstone, and if a few structural issues were sorted out, it would have gotten a much reception. [Read more…]

First Look At Charlize Theron As A Fast & Furious 8 Baddie

21st May 2016 By Tim Isaac

fast-and-furious-8-charlize-theronA few months ago it was revealed that Charlize Theron was turning villain once more, this time as the bad guy in the latest Fast & Furious movie. Now she’s on the set and the first picture of her in the movie has been released, via Twitter. It has to be said though, it sure looks like she’s been visited by the airbrush fairies.

Not a vast amount if known about her character, beyond the fact she’s called Cipher and likes ‘classic rock’ and ‘giant freaking guns’. It’s also known she’s out to destroy Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel), and the rest of the Fast & Furious crew. The last couple of movies have focused on the emnity between the good guys and the Shaw brothers (Luke Evans and Jason Statham), but it’s not known if Cipher is linked to them.

Dwayne Johnson, Kurt Russell, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Nathalie Emmanuel, Scott Eastwood and Kristofer Hivju star. [Read more…]

Charlize Theron Re-Teaming With Diablo Cody & Jason Reitman For A New Film

5th April 2016 By Tim Isaac

charlize-theronSome loved 2011’s Young Adult while others were far less impressed, but some of the creative team are getting back together. Deadline reports that Charlize Theron is loosely attached to a new script by Diablo Cody (Juno), which Jason Reitman is attached to direct.

Everything is in the early stages, to the point where no plot details have been released, other than that it centres around motherhood.

There was a lot of interest in Young Adult, partly because it reunited Reitman and Cody after the Oscar winning success of Juno. Despite a largely positive critical reaction (although with qualifications), it didn’t really find much interest from audience, only grossing $22 million at cinemas around the world. Hopefully the new film will find a bit more success.

New The Huntsman: Winter’s War Trailer – Chris Hemsworth & Charlize Theron return to fantasy

22nd March 2016 By Tim Isaac

huntsman-winter-war-slide1It’s back to the fairytale realm for The Huntsman: Winter’s War, which has just dropped a new trailer. As with previous promos, it’s difficult not to get the feeling you’re watching a live-action, more grown-up version of Frozen, and it’s tough to know whether that was the intention or not.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The fantastical world of Snow White and the Huntsman expands to reveal how the fates of The Huntsman Eric and Queen Ravenna are deeply and dangerously intertwined. Chris Hemsworth and Oscar® winner Charlize Theron return to their roles in The Huntsman Winter’s War, an epic action-adventure in which they are joined by Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain, as well as director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan. Producer Joe Roth (Maleficent, Alice in Wonderland) once again leads the team in a breathtaking new tale nested in the legendary saga.

‘Long before the evil Queen Ravenna (Theron) was thought vanquished by Snow White’s blade, she watched silently as her sister, Freya (Blunt), suffered a heartbreaking betrayal and fled their kingdom. With Freya’s ability to freeze any enemy, the young ice queen has spent decades in a remote wintry palace raising a legion of deadly huntsmen—including Eric (Hemsworth) and warrior Sara (Chastain)—only to find that her prized two defied her one demand: Forever harden your hearts to love.

‘When Freya learns of her sister’s demise, she summons her remaining soldiers to bring the Magic Mirror home to the only sorceress left who can harness its power. But once she discovers Ravenna can be resurrected from its golden depths, the wicked sisters threaten this enchanted land with twice the darkest force it’s ever seen. Now, their amassing army shall prove undefeatable…unless the banished huntsmen who broke their queen’s cardinal rule can fight their way back to one another.’

The film hits cinemas April 4th. [Read more…]

Chris Hemsworth, Jessica Chastain, Charlize Theron and Emily Blunt Get A New The Huntsman: Winter’s War Poster

23rd February 2016 By Tim Isaac

Huntsman-Winters-War-poster-slideThe big budget ‘summer’ movie season is starting early this year, with the likes of Batman v Superman on March 25th and The Huntsman: Winter’s War on April 4th. The latter has now released its final official poster, which you can see below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Discover the story that came before Snow White in The Huntsman: Winter’s War. Chris Hemsworth and Oscar® winner Charlize Theron return to their roles from Snow White and the Huntsman, joined by Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain.

‘Theron stars as evil Queen Ravenna, who betrays her good sister Freya (Blunt) with an unforgivable act, freezing Freya’s heart to love and unleashing in her an icy power she never knew she possessed. Retreating to a kingdom far to the north, Freya raises an army of Huntsmen as her protectors, with the only rule that no two of them should ever fall in love.

‘As a war for domination escalates between the two queens, the hero standing between them is Freya’s most elite Huntsman, Eric (Hemsworth). Alongside fellow warrior Sara (Chastain)—the only woman who has ever captured his heart—Eric must help Freya vanquish her sister…or Ravenna’s wickedness will rule for eternity.’ [Read more…]
