Christian Bale Will Be One Of The Hostiles For Director Scott Cooper

19th February 2016 By Tim Isaac

christian-baleBack in 2013 Christian Bale and director Scott Cooper worked together on Out Of The Furnace. It wasn’t a great success but they obviously liked working with one another, as Variety reports they’re set to reteam for the movie Hostiles, which Cooper is also writing.

Set at the end of the 19th Century, the film ‘tells the story of a legendary Army captain, who agrees to escort a dying Cheyenne war chief and his family back to tribal lands. Making the harrowing and perilous journey from an isolated Army outpost in New Mexico to the grasslands of Montana, the former rivals encounter a young widow whose family was murdered on the plains. Together, they must join forces to overcome the punishing landscape and hostile Comanche tribes that they encounter along the way.’

It certainly sounds like an ambitious one, and hopefully the script will be careful to avoid accusations of having ‘white savior’ issues. Filming is set to begin in July.

Hardcore Henry Trailer – Action cinema goes completely first person shooter

11th February 2016 By Tim Isaac

hardcore-henry-pic1Last September we posted a very violent trailer for a movie called Hardcore, which was creating a bit of a buzz at SXSW due to the fact the entire thing is film like a first person shooter. Since then the film has had a slight title change – to Hardcore Henry – but other than that looks as mental as it did before.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Strap in. Hardcore Henry is an original film that was shot completely from the hero’s perspective. You remember nothing. Mainly because you’ve just been brought back from the dead by your wife (Haley Bennett). She tells you that your name is Henry. Five minutes later, you are being shot at, your wife has been kidnapped, and you should probably go get her back. Who’s got her? His name’s Akan (Danila Kozlovsky); he’s a powerful warlord with an army of mercenaries, and a plan for world domination. You’re also in an unfamiliar city of Moscow, and everyone wants you dead. Everyone except for a mysterious British man called Jimmy (Sharlto Copley). He may be on your side, but you aren’t sure. If you can survive the insanity, and solve the mystery, you might just discover your purpose and the truth behind your identity. Good luck, Henry. You’re likely going to need it…’

Take a look at the new trailer below. It’ll be in cinemas in April. [Read more…]

Legend (Blu-ray Review)

24th January 2016 By Tim Isaac

legend-bd-slideStarring: Tom Hardy, Emily Browning, Christopher Eccleston, David Thewlis, Taron Egerton
Directed By: Brian Helgeland
Running Time: 131 mins
BBFC Certificate: 15
UK Release Date: January 25th 2016 (UK)

Our Score

There are quite a few people who don’t like the glamorisation (almost fetishisation) or The Krays and London’s East End gangsters of the 1960s, feeling these were nasty, vicious men and should be treated as such. If they were hoping this new biopic of the Kray twins would burst their legend, the title should have given them a hint that it wouldn’t (although it does also suggest the film knows it’s helping cement a fantasy of their lives).

Tom Hardy plays both Ronnie and Reggie Kray, with the movie picking up after the twins have already started making their name as gangsters, running nightclubs and operating an expanding protection racket. The film follows their continuing rise and fall, framed by Reggie’s romance and marriage to Frances O’Shea (Emily Browning). While their growing notoriety and the edge of glamour ensures they have the sort of high connections that gives them a certain amount of protection – and perhaps a sense of invulnerability – it also makes them bigger targets for those who would like to bring them down. Jim Henson’s Labyrinth Is Getting A Film Reboot

24th January 2016 By Tim Isaac

labyrinthOver the years The Jim Henson Company has talked about many ideas for what it might do with its properties (for example the long-gestating Fraggle Rock movie), but nothing has materialised. Now they’re hoping to revisit Labyrinth, the 1986 movie starring David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly.

According to THR, Guardians of the Galaxy co-writer Nicole Perlman has been brought on-board to handle the script. However, it’s not 100% clear what sort of movie they’re planning, such as whether it will be a straight remake, a reimagining, reboot or sequel.

The original followed a teenage girl who, fed up with have to babysit her baby brother, wishes he was taken away by the goblins, little suspecting that this is just what will happen. She must them go into a fantasy land and enter the labyrinth, having only 12 hours to get her brother back.

While it was judged a failure on its first release, the movie has since gained cult status, and there’s certainly plenty of scope for another visit to the world of Jareth the Goblin King – although as it’s a role that so brilliantly fitted David Bowie, it’ll be strange to see someone else take the role.
