At the end of Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid, the duo are caught in a famous freeze-frame, so that while it look like they’re going to die, the question is left open. The movie didn’t do that just because it’s better than seeing the protagonist gets their heads blown off, but because there are genuine questions about whether they truly died in a stand-off in Bolivia in 1908 (they almost certainly did, but the bodies were never formally indentified, and legends grew up that Cassidy at least had survived). The new movie Blackthorn supposes Butch (Sam Shepard) did indeed live on long past his supposed expiration date, and is quietly living out his years under the name James Blackthorn in a secluded Bolivian village. Tired of his long exile from the US and hoping to see his family again before he dies, Cassidy sets out on the long journey home. But when an unexpected encounter with an ambitious young criminal (Eduardo Noriega) derails his plans, he is thrust into one last adventure, the likes of which he hasn’t experienced since his glory days with the Sundance Kid. No UK release date has been set, but take a look at the trailer belwo.
Real Steel Featurette – Mo-capping robot boxers for the Hugh Jackman flick
A new featurette for the upcoming sci-fi action flick Real Steel has arrived, which sees Hugh Jackman telling us a little about the movie, as well as showing off the motion-capture that went into creating the robot boxers. They even had Sugar Ray Leonard on hand to help with the choreography! Here’s the synopsis: A gritty, white-knuckle, action ride set in the near-future where the sport of boxing has gone high-tech, Real Steel stars Hugh Jackman as Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next. When Charlie hits rock bottom, he reluctantly teams up with his estranged son Max (Dakota Goyo) to build and train a championship contender. As the stakes in the brutal, no-holds-barred arena are raised, Charlie and Max, against all odds, get one last shot at a comeback.’ The film hits cinemas, October 7th, 2011. Carnage Trailer – First look at Polanski’s latest starring Jodie Foster & Kate Winslet
The first trailer for Roman Polanski’s latest, Carnage, has arrived, starring Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz and John C. Reilly. Essentially a four-hander, the movie follows the aftermath of a showdown between two kids, about 11, in a local playground. After swollen lips and broken teeth, the parents of the “victim” have invited the parents of the “bully” to their apartment to sort if out. Cordial banter gradually develops a razor-sharp edge as all four parents reveal their laughable contradictions and grotesque prejudices. None of them will escape the ensuing carnage. It’s all a little Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?, and it’ll be interesting to see if Polanski can handle a small intimate cast as well as he did with Death And The Maiden (which was mainly just three people). No UK release date is set.
Trishna Trailer – Michael Winterbottom takes Tess Of The d’Urbervilles to India
Michael Winterbottom is known for challenging convention with his movies, and he also seem to have a bit of an obsession with Thomas Hardy (although goodness knows why, as he is the most redious of writers), having previously directed adaptations of Jude The Obscure (Jude) and The Mayor Of Casterbridge (The Claim). While Jude played it straight, The Claim transplanted the tale from 19th Century Wessex to the California Gold Rush, and now he’s taking Tess Of The d’Urbervilles to India with Trishna, starring Freida Pinto. Now the first trailer has arrived, which you can see below.
Hardy’s story is transplanted to the subcontinent to become about the romance between the son of a property developer and the daughter of an auto rickshaw owner. However the pair’s love is complicated between her rural roots and his more modern, urban life. In the book, much of the story is about Tess’ rape and the lengthy aftermath of that, but there’s little evidence that will form a large part of the film, although the trailer may just be making things seem more jolly than they are (and Winterbottom isn’t known for shrinking from the dark side of a story). No release date is yet set, but it premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 9th.
