Jake Gyllenhaal is certainly trying out a new look in End Of Watch, with his hair completely shaved off as he goes cop and heads out onto the mean streets. The film stars Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena as two LAPD cops who take pride in their work and friendship, but one day see their lives come under even more threat than usual. The new Red Band trailer suggests the movie is going to try and put you in thick of the action, almost like it’s a documentary. The film is out in the UK on November 23rd, 2012.

 

Eric Bana likes being a tortured soul, and it appears that’s going to continue in his new movie, Deadfall. In the film, siblings Addison (Eric Bana) and Liza (Olivia Wilde) are on the run from a casino heist gone wrong. When a car accident leaves their wheel man and a state trooper dead, they split up and make a run for the Canadian border in the worst of circumstances – a near whiteout blizzard. While Addison heads cross-country, creating mayhem in his wake, Liza is picked up by ex-boxer Jay (Charlie Hunnam), en-route for a Thanksgiving homecoming with his parents, June (Sissy Spacek) and retired sheriff Chet (Kris Kristofferson). It’s there the siblings are reunited in a terse and thrilling showdown that pushes the bonds of family to the limit.

Great Expectations is one of the most adapted stories of all time, and now it’s getting a new movie version courtesy of Mike Newell (Goblet Of Fire, Prince Of Persia), packed with Brit talent. War Horse’s Jeremy Irvine stars orphan Pip, who becomes the playmate and admirer of Estella (Holliday Grainger), the wars of the batty Miss Haversham (Helena Bonham Carter). Ralph Fiennes is the escaped prsioner Magwitch, while Robbie Coltrane, Jason Flemyng, Jeremy Irvine, Ewen Bremner & Sally Hawkins also star. The film debuts at the Toronto International Film Festival next month, before getting unleashed in UK cinemas on November 30th.

The remake of Red Dawn has been severely delayed by MGM’s bankruptcy. It was filmed back in 2009, at which time it didn’t have any big stars in it, but the delay may have helped, as Chris Hemsworth and Josh hutcherson are now much bigger names than they were then. It’s finally set for release in Novermber. In the movie, a city in Washington state awakens to the surreal sight of foreign paratroopers dropping from the sky – shockingly, the US has been invaded and their hometown is the initial target. Quickly and without warning, the citizens find themselves prisoners and their town under enemy occupation. Determined to fight back, a group of young patriots seek refuge in the surrounding woods, training and reorganizing themselves into a guerilla group of fighters. Taking inspiration from their high school mascot, they call themselves the Wolverines, banding together to protect one another, liberate their town from its captors, and take back their freedom. If your dad is David Cronenberg, it’s not surprising if your directorial debut is going to be a little bit creepy and follow some of your father’s body horror interests. Brandon Cronenberg has made Antiviral, which debuted at Cannes and will play TIFF next month. The sci-fi film follows Syd March (Caleb Landry Jones), an employee of an unusual company that sells celebrity diseases to deranged fans. By becoming infected with the same viruses that have afflicted their favourite stars, these disturbed celebrity devotees hope to get a little closer to their famous idols. But when Syd is infected by a disease that took the life of a young starlet (Sarah Gadon), he suddenly finds that he has become a twisted collector’s item.

Newly single and uninspired by his job in college admissions, the introverted Jesse Fisher (Josh Radnor) lives with his head buried in a book. His deep nostalgia for his own alma mater in Ohio – the dining halls and dorm rooms, the parties and poetry seminars – makes him wonder if his best days are behind him. So when his favorite professor (Richard Jenkins) invites him back to campus to speak at his retirement dinner, Jesse jumps at the chance. Meeting Zibby (Elizabeth Olsen) — a precocious classical music-loving sophomore — awakens in Jesse long-dormant feelings of possibility and connection.
