Synopsis: ‘Set in ’70s Kingston and ’80s Hackney, Yardie centres on the life of a young Jamaican man named D (Aml Ameen), who has never fully recovered from the murder, committed during his childhood, of his older brother Jerry Dread (Everaldo Creary). D grows up under the wing of a Kingston Don and music producer named King Fox (Sheldon Shepherd). Fox dispatches him to London, where he reconnects with his childhood sweetheart, Yvonne (Shantol Jackson), and his daughter who he’s not seen since she was a baby.
‘He also hooks up with a soundclash crew, called High Noon. But before he can be convinced to abandon his life of crime and follow “the righteous path”, he encounters the man who shot his brother 10 years earlier, and embarks on a bloody, explosive quest for retribution – a quest which brings him into conflict with vicious London gangster Rico (Stephen Graham).’

Synopsis: ‘Millie (Berry) is a hardworking single mom with a soft spot for strays. When Kings begins, she already has eight children living in her house and will soon bring home another. Her neighbor Obie (Craig) is the local loose cannon, and the only white man in an area largely inhabited by African Americans, Latinos, and Koreans. With racial tensions running dangerously high, Millie and Obie would appear to be unlikely allies. Yet following the acquittal of four of the officers accused of beating Rodney King, these two must navigate the gathering chaos in the city to bring Millie’s kids home safely.’
The big winner at the British Academy Film Awards was Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, which was named Best Film and Outstanding British Film (despite being set in the US, it was made with largely British and Irish money and expertise), with Martin McDonagh winning Original Screenplay, Sam Rockwell taking Supporting Actor, and Frances McDormand receiving the BAFTA for Leading Actress. It cements its position as the frontrunner for the Oscars.
Who is Mary Magdalene? She’s probably best known for being a prostitute – although the problem with that is that it doesn’t actually say she was in The Bible. Her lady of the night reputation came along much later. More recently Dan Brown decided she was Jesus’ wife. But who was she really?
Most studios making family films try to get the sequel into cinemas as quickly as possible, as they’re worried the original audience will have grown too old to want to see it is they wait too long. However, that’s not a problem Pixar has had to worry about, and its unlikely to affect The Incredibles 2, which is set to arrive 14 years after the first movie.
Ready Player One is definitely one of the most intriguing movies of 2018 – a film packed to the brim with references to great films of the past – from King Kong to The Iron Giant to Back To The Future – directed by the great bearded one himself, Steven Spielberg.
