Win The Blaxploitation Classic Willie Dynamite On DVD/Blu-ray Dual Format!

5th February 2017 By Tim Isaac

To celebrate the release of Willie Dynamite – out Dual Format 6th Feb. 2017 – we are giving away a copy courtesy of Arrow Video!

HE’S TIGHT, TOGETHER, AND MEAN.

“The hands-down winner of the all-out best blaxploitation movie of the seventies,” declares author and artist Darius James in That’s Blaxploitation! Willie Dynamite may not be as well-known as John Shaft, Sweet Sweetback or Super Fly’s Youngblood Priest, but he certainly deserves to be.

Who is Willie Dynamite? He’s the flashiest pimp in New York – he drives a personalised purple-and-gold Cadillac and wears some of the most eye-catching outfits ever seen on a cinema screen. He wants to be number one, but with the police, the D.A., fellow pimps and a tough-talking social worker on his tail, can a man as arrogant and amoral as Willie D avoid a downfall?

Willie Dynamite competes with the best of blaxploitation on all levels. Roscoe Orman dominates with his central performance – a star turn that’s the equal of Richard Roundtree in Shaft or Pam Grier in Coffy. Multi-award-winning director Gilbert Moses balances action and social commentary as deftly as Gordon Parks, Jr. did with Super Fly. And the score by J.J. Johnson featuring Motown legend Martha Reeves is as catchy as anything composed by Isaac Hayes, Curtis Mayfield or James Brown.

To be in with a chance of winning Willie Dynamite on DVD/Blu-ray, just answer the question below and fill in your details, then press submit! The competition closes on February 19th, 2017, so get answering and good luck. [Read more…]

Win Brian De Palma’s Raising Cain On DVD/Blu-ray Dual Format!

1st February 2017 By Tim Isaac

To celebrate the release of Raising Cain – out Dual Format 30th Jan. 2017 – we are giving away a copy courtesy of Arrow Video!

Having spent the latter half of the eighties trying out new styles of filmmaking – Wise Guys’ knockabout comedy, The Untouchables’ prestige gangster pic, Casualties of War’s Vietnam movie and The Bonfire of the Vanities’ satirical misfire – Brian De Palma returned to what he knew best, the Hitchcockian psycho-thriller, for Raising Cain.

John Lithgow plays three roles: child psychologist Carter, his evil twin brother Cain, and their Norwegian father, Dr Nix, who likes to experimental on the young. Carter’s wife is concerned that her husband isn’t quite paying their daughter the right kind of attention; she’s also having an affair which, upon discovery, threatens to send him into a psychotic rage…

A relentless blend of murder, multiple personalities, cross-dressing, crazed parents, bizarre dream sequences and stunning cinematic assurance, Raising Cain harks back to those twin masterpieces Psycho and Peeping Tom, but is pure unadulterated De Palma.

To be in with a chance of winning Raising Cain on DVD/Blu-ray, just answer the question below and fill in your details, then press submit! The competition closes on February 15th, 2017, so get answering and good luck. [Read more…]

Win The South Korean Horror-Thriller The Wailing On DVD!

30th January 2017 By Tim Isaac

To celebrate the DVD release of THE WAILING, available on DVD from 30th January, we have a copy of the DVD up for grabs, courtesy of Kaleidoscope Entertainment!

South Korean box office smash, THE WAILING, is a riveting police investigation which turns into a sensationally terrifying thriller as a likeable cop is drawn into a nightmarish hunt for a source of pure evil disturbing his quiet, rural village.

Out of his depth, local police officer Jong-goo investigates a spate of killings, as well as an outbreak of madness seemingly connected to the recent arrival of a mysterious Japanese man who resides in the outskirts of the village. What’s more, he is horrified to discover his young daughter may have fallen under the stranger’s curse.

Jong-goo calls on a charismatic shaman to free his daughter from the stranger’s dangerous influence, but the shaman’s intense exorcism ritual threatens to worsen the situation… and Jong-goo, with his world collapsing around him, realises he must confront the ultimate evil.

With the likes of The Host, I Saw The Devil, and Train To Busan, South Korea is developing a reputation for producing top quality, world class horror films. THE WAILING cements that reputation – a box office smash, having taken over $50 million dollars in South Korea alone, the film is a stunning entertainment quite unlike anything that’s gone before. Hong-jin Na (who directed the acclaimed thriller Chaser) effortlessly combines bone-chilling frights and heart-wrenching drama with moments of comedy to relieve the nerve-shattering subject matter.

Packed with real emotional weight, and a devilish final act twist, this is assured, impressive and wildly original piece of filmmaking featuring inept cops, red-eyed flesh chewing ghouls, a mysterious shaman and a sinister stranger, as well as the most foul-mouthed possessed youngster since The Exorcist.

To be in with a chance of winning The Wailing on DVD, just answer the question below and fill in your details, then press submit! The competition closes on February 13th, 2017, so get answering and good luck. [Read more…]

Win John Michael McDonagh’s War On Everyone On Blu-ray!

29th January 2017 By Tim Isaac

To celebrate the release of WAR ON EVERYONE – available now on Digital Download and DVD & Blu-ray 30th Jan – we are giving away a copy on Blu-ray courtesy of Icon Home Entertainment.

John Michael McDonagh, the award winning writer/director of The Guard and Calvary, heads stateside for this unapologetically offensive buddy movie comedy thriller, starring True Blood’s Alexander Skarsgård and End of Watch’s Michael Peña, as a pair of crooked cops the likes of which you’ve never seen before.

Skarsgård and Peña really shine as the corrupt cops who get out of their depth, and share some wonderfully surreal, part-improvised moments, aided and abetted by a superb support casts that boasts Paul Reiser, Westworld sensation Tessa Thompson, and Caleb Landry Jones, a stand-out as strip club manager Birdwell.

Suffused with McDonagh’s trademark jet black humour, littered here with a generous helping of near-the-knuckle, take-no-prisoners gags, and featuring an off kilter, anything goes plotline, this is two parts Tarantino, one part Jim Thompson, with a hefty measure of Shane Black, all shaken up into a fine and frenzied film cocktail.
