New Detroit Trailer – John Boyega stars in Kathryn Bigelow’s look at the 1967 riots

17th June 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Following her looks at contemporary warfare with The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty, director Kathryn Bigelow is heading back into the past to look at a different kind of battle – the riots that ripped through Detroit in 1967.

Although many outsiders saw Detroit as leading the way in desegregation in the 1960s, this covered up massive racial and social inequalities, and efforts to deal with some of these problems led to growing tension. That boiled over in July 1967 following a police raid on an unlicensed bar, leading to five days of riots that left 43 dead, 1189 injured and over 2000 buildings destroyed.

In the movie, John Boyega plays a security guard facing the issues with the police force, which has been desegregated but is still rife with bigotry and institutional racism. He then gets caught up in the events that overtake the city.

Take a look at the trailer below. The movie is due in cinemas in August. [Read more…]

New The Circle Trailer – Emma Watson & Tom Hanks explore the dangers of modern technology

9th February 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Based on a Dave Eggers novel, The Circle is a film that’s vaguely science-fiction, but actually far closer to reality than we might like to admit. After all, Google and Facebook already know more about us than even our closest friends.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The Circle is a gripping modern thriller, set in the not-too-distant future, starring Emma Watson (“Harry Potter”), Tom Hanks (“Sully”) and John Boyega (“Star Wars: The Force Awakens”). When Mae (Emma Watson) is hired to work for the world’s largest and most powerful tech & social media company, she sees it as an opportunity of a lifetime.  As she rises through the ranks, she is encouraged by the company’s founder, Eamon Bailey (Tom Hanks), to engage in a groundbreaking experiment that pushes the boundaries of privacy, ethics and ultimately her personal freedom.  Her participation in the experiment, and every decision she makes begin to affect the lives and future of her friends, family and that of humanity.’

The likes of John Boyega, Karen Gillan, Patton Oswalt, Bill Paxton and Glenne Headly also star. Take a look at the trailer below. The film will be in US cinemas in April, but no UK date is currently set. [Read more…]

First Official Look At John Boyega In Pacific Rim: Uprising

7th February 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

As Pacific Rim wasn’t quite a big a hit as the studio had hoped, you’d have thought that if they were gonna make a sequel, they would do it quickly. However, they’ve taken their time, with the movie almost being a reboot, with most of the main characters getting replaced and a story that is reported to jump forward in time.

This time around, we won’t be following Charlie Hunnam’s Raleigh Becket, with the central role instead going to John Boyega. Now, thanks to a tweet that gives us our first official look at the actor in character, it’s been confirmed he will be called Pentecost – Stacker Pentecost to be precised, the son of Idris Elba’s character from the first movie.

Not a vast amount more is known about the plot, although it known Boyega will be a Jaeger pilot, and presumably will be using his giant robot to take on more giant monsters spilling out of the ocean. Steven S. DeKnight directs the movie, with Guillermo Del Toro just producing this time. [Read more…]

The Circle Trailer – Emma Watson and Tom Hanks take on a techno-thriller

6th December 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

the-circles-slide-2017Based on a Dave Eggers novel, The Circle is a film that’s vaguely science-fiction, but actually far closer to reality than we might like to admit. After all, Google and Facebook already know more about us than even our closest friends.

Watson plays a young woman who’s hired for a big job in an Internet company called the Circle, which links users’ personal emails, social media, banking, and purchasing with their universal operating system, resulting in one online identity and a new age of civility and transparency. It’s there that she meets a mysterious older man, Bailey, who has created the Circle.

Director James Ponsoldt comments to USA Today, “Bailey’s notion is that knowing is good, and knowing everything is better. He believes all experiences should be available to everyone, not only the privileged or people who can afford to them. He’s deeply interested in technology that can make people share all human experiences with everyone. He’s a boundary pusher, even boundary destroyer.”

The likes of John Boyega, Karen Gillan, Patton Oswalt, Bill Paxton and Glenne Headly also star. Take a look at the trailer below. The film will be in cinemas next year. [Read more…]

John Boyega Signs On For Pacific Rim 2

6th June 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

john-boyegaIt’s all change for Pacific Rim 2. Guillermo Del Toro has stepped away and will no longer write or direct, and it’s expected most of the cast will change. However, Legendary has started piecing together who will star, with the studio announcing that Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ John Boyega is set to take the lead role.

There’s not too much info on the character, other than that Boyega will be the son of Idris Elba’s character from the original film. That suggests there may be a bit of a time jump for this follow up.

Del Toro, who is still onboard as a producer, comments, “I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox. The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. ‘The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job.”

Jurassic World screenwriter Derek Connolly is currently working on the script, with Steven S. DeKnight directing. While no plot details have been released, it’s a safe bet that monsters will once more be threatening the earth, with giant robots our only defence.
