Kellan Lutz To Be Motion-Capture Tarzan – Alongside Spencer Locke as Jane

4th May 2012 By Tim Isaac

Although there’s been a lot of interest in the supporting actors from Twilight, the only one of them to have real success outside the franchise is Anna Kendrick, who was Oscar-nominated for Up In The Air. However the hunk of muscle that is Kellan Lutz certainly looks like an action star, and now he’s going performance-capture, playing Tarzan in a new CG take on the classic tale, according to Deadline.

Lutz will play the man brought up by chimps in the jungle, with the motion-capture technology allowing him to swing through the trees like never before. Resident Evil: Afterlife actress Spencer Locke is in talks to play Jane in the film.

Reinhard Klooss (Animals United) will direct, with Constantin Films backing the movie.

The Expendables 2 Trailer – The ultimate action crew?

4th May 2012 By Tim Isaac

If you thought the action crew in The Expendables was good, The Expendables 2 plans to blow it out of the water, and the new trailer is here to prove it. Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone), Lee Christmas (Jason Statham), Yin Yang (Jet Li), Gunnar Jensen (Dolph Lundgren),Toll Road (Randy Couture) and Hale Caesar (Terry Crews) are back – alongside new members Billy the Kid (Liam Hemsworth) and Maggie (Yu Nan) – are reunited when Mr. Church (Bruce Willis) enlists the Expendables to take on a seemingly simple job. The task looks like an easy paycheck for Barney and his band of old-school mercenaries. But when things go wrong and one of their own is viciously killed, the Expendables are compelled to seek revenge in hostile territory where the odds are stacked against them. Hell-bent on payback, the crew cuts a swath of destruction through opposing forces, wreaking havoc and shutting down an unexpected threat in the nick of time – six tons of weapons-grade plutonium; enough to change the balance of power in the world. But that’s nothing compared to the justice they serve against the villainous adversary who savagely murdered their brother. The film’s out August 17th.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter Featurette – Origins Of A Superhero

4th May 2012 By Tim Isaac

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun, and now a new featurette has emerged, which treats the US President’s story as if in real-life he really was battling bloodsuckers and was essentially ‘the Batman of the 19th Century’. There’s also plenty of great footage from the film, which arrives in cinemas on August 2nd. The film reimagines Lincoln as a man driven by an insatiable hatred of the vampires who killed his mother and whose rise to the top on the US was all about battling the supernatural.

American Pie: Reunion – Does the world need more pie?

4th May 2012 By Tim Isaac

Being a reviewer in this, the “reboot” era, is sometimes an education in itself. Seeing films from one’s earlier years, especially those that deal specifically with being young and stupid, and judging them again in the cold, harsh light of adulthood, is quite a frightening experience. Looking back on the American Pie series now, especially for someone who wasn’t a huge fan to begin with, paints a rather distressing picture of teen life in the late 90s.

Before I start being labelled a snob or a conservative, I should point out that I am quite partial to the “gross-out” genre, when done a certain way. The ongoing adventures of Harold & Kumar (the creators of which directed this latest addition to the American Pie saga), for example, are perfectly acceptable, even good examples of the self-referential absurdity needed to pull this genre off. Early Ryan Reynolds vehicle Van Wilder: Party Liason also contained enough charm and unexpected wit to be at least semi-appealing. My problem with the American Pie franchise is that it has always tried to balance societal comment with obscene comedy and managed to achieve neither.

So here we are, nearly a decade since the last proper installation of the franchise (there have been several equally risible straight-to-DVD spin-offs) and the gang have moved on. Jim (Jason Biggs) & Michelle (Alyson Hannigan) are married with a kid. Oz (Chris Klein) is a celebrity sports reporter, Kevin is an architect and Finch has disappeared. A 10-year reunion, however, brings them all back together for the usual brand of puerile hi-jinx.

For the most part, American Reunion is a piece of harmless fun, the cast work well together, with time eroding none of chemistry between them. The apparently ageless Alyson Hannigan plays a particularly good game, her performance layered with all of the issues and potential regret that dominate the minds of those bidding farewell to their 20s.

Unfortunately as likeable and relatable as the characters and situation are, the comedy is distinctly hit and miss, with more misses than hits. Ten years ago, Stifler defecating in a cooler would have illicited guffaws worldwide and been talked about as a classic comedy moment, but instead seems tired and dated in this age of post-post-modern comedy.

Unlike its horror equivalent, Scream 4, American Pie: Reunion misses a golden opportunity to deconstruct the genre that the original virtually created 13 years ago. Instead, it’s just another member of that genre, swimming adrift in an endless sea of crass jokes and obvious set pieces. Not a bad film, by any means, but this slice of pie is all pastry, no filling.

Overall Verdict: A decent coming of age comedy with some memorable moments, but when taken as a whole, it just doesn’t provide enough consistent quality to be anything other than just another genre piece.

End Of Watch Trailer – Jake Gylenhaal goes cop and tries out the shaved head look

4th May 2012 By Tim Isaac

Jake Gyllenhaal is certainly trying out a new look in End Of Watch, with his hair completely shaved off as he goes cop and heads out onto the mean streets. The film stars Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena as two LAPD cops who take pride in their work and friendship, but one day see their lives come under even more threat than usual. The trailer suggests the movie is going to try and put you in thick of the action, almost like it’s a documentary. The film is out in September.

iLL Manors Trailer – Take a look at Plan B’s directorial debut

4th May 2012 By Tim Isaac

At the age of only 28, Ben ‘Plan B’ Drew is busy being quite the renaissance man. He’s taken the music world by storm, proved a capable actor in the likes of Adulthood and Harry Brown, and now he’s written and directed iLL Manors. The movie is out June 6th, and now the full trailer is available. Here’s the synopsis: ‘A unique crime thriller set on the unforgiving streets of London, iLL MANORS follows six disparate lives, all struggling to survive the circles of violence that engulf them. There is ex-dealer Kirby, who has just been released from prison, thug Ed who will stop at nothing to find his missing phone, troubled Michelle who is just looking for her next hit, young Jake who finds himself drawn to the local gang, Chris, who seeks revenge, Katya, who is desperately trying to escape this foreign land, and Aaron, our main protagonist who is just trying to do the right thing. Narratively linked through original music from Plan B, the film is a visually stunning and emotionally impactful experience, laced with street-wise humour. Ground-breaking in its approach, iLL MANORS proves to be one of the must-see films of 2012.’
