Alfonso Poyart Eyes Anthony Hopkins’ Solace – He’s in talks for the supernatural thriller

12th May 2012 By Tim Isaac

Despite the fact he feels a bit like he’s been coasting for the past decade, Anthony Hopkins is still a name to conjure with. Now he’s putting together a supernatural thriller called Solace, and Variety reports Brazilian director Afonso Poyart is now in talks to direct.

The film centres on a doctor (Hopkins) with psychic abilities, who hunts down a serial killer. No production start date has been set. The Queen’s Peter Morgan is currently revising his script, with Beau Flynn and Tripp Vinson producing.

This project will mark Poyart’s English-language debut, after gaining attention for his Brazilian hit 2 Coelhos (a.k.a. Two Rabbits), which he starred in, directed, wrote and produced.

Sam Claflin Joins The Quiet Ones – He joins Jared Harris in the supernatural thriller

12th May 2012 By Tim Isaac

On Stranger Tides wasn’t quite the star making turn Sam Claflin must have been hoping for, but it certainly raised his profile and he’s got another chance to really make an impact next month in Snow White and the Huntsman. Now it’s been announced that Claflin has signed on to star opposite Jared Harris in Hammer Film’s The Quiet Ones.

Claflin will play Bryan McNeil in the supernatural thriller/horror, which will be directed by John Pogue (Quarantine 2: Terminal) from and original screenplay by Tom de Ville, with revisions by Craig Rosenberg, Oren Moverman and most recently John Pogue. The movie will start shooting in June 2012 in the UK.

Inspired by true events (hmm, yeah right), The Quiet Ones tells the story of an unorthodox, but charismatic Professor (Harris) who uses controversial methods and leads his best students off the grid to take part in a dangerous experiment: to create a poltergeist from negative human energy.

The Quiet Ones marks Hammer’s next production after the worldwide box office hit, The Woman in Black, starring Daniel Radcliffe, which has taken over $130 million at the box-office worldwide to date.

Neil Marshall Directing The Last Voyage of Demeter – He takes on the Dracula tale

12th May 2012 By Tim Isaac

For nearly a decade now, producers have been trying to get The Last Voyage Of The Demeter to the screen, with a seemingly endless list of directors coming and going from the movie, but no movie ever coming of it. They’re not giving up though, as after Robert Schwentke (Red), Marcus Nispel (Conan the Barbarian), Stefan Ruzowitzky (The Counterfeiters),and David Slade (Hard Candy) have all left the project, THR reports that Neil Marshall (Centurion, The Descent) has signed on to helm.

Bragi F. Schut wrote the original screenplay, which expands on a small portion of Bram Stoker’s Dracula novel. The Demeter was the ship that transported the vampire from Transylvania to London, except the ship washes up on shore with only one survivor left. This story tells the tale of that voyage, where one undead passenger murdered the ship’s crew, one by one.

When David Slade was attached to the project, Noomi Rapace and Ben Kingsley were set to star. It isn’t known if the actors are still involved. There’s no news on when it might shoot (or giving it’s history, when the next director will come onboard).

It’s been an uphill struggle for Lee Daniels to make a follow-up to Previous, but now he’s got The Paperboy, which will debut in competition at Cannes later this month. The first clip has now been released, with Matthew McConaughey’s reporter talking to John Cusack about a murder. The film is about a directionless young man (Zac Efron) who helps his reporter brother (McConaughey) investigate the possible wrongful conviction of a man on death row (Cusack), and in the process, falls for the woman whom the convict has been romancing through prison correspondence. It shoulld be out later this year.

Mothman (DVD) – Death by CGI trash bags!

11th May 2012 By Tim Isaac

It’s rather odd that a small, provincial supernatural legend has managed to spawn two films, especially as that legend is incredibly dumb. Buy hey, the 2002 Richard Gere movie The Mothman Prophecies was actually a lot better than it had any right to be. Sadly the same can’t be said for Mothman.

A group of teenagers are having a swim one night and telling scary stories about the local legend of the mothman – a man shaped killer creature said to live nearby – to one of their younger brothers. Deciding the kid isn’t scared enough, they start to prank him, pulling him under the water, but soon things have gone too far and he’s drowned. 10 years later one of the teens, Katherine (Firefly’s Jewel Staite), is now a journalist sent back to her hometown to report on the local mothman festival. Almost as soon as she arrives and all those responsible for the drowning are back together, the mothman turns out to be very real. It’s a demonic avenging angel that emerges out of reflective surfaces to kill those who’ve gotten away with murder, and it’s determined to kill everyone involved in the death of the boy.

I don’t think I really need to say much more as you can probably tell just from that synopsis that this is not going to be joining Halloween and Psycho among the all-time horror greats. While there are worse films out there, Mothman ain’t great, with a plot that ranges from the perfunctory to the downright dumb, a bunch of completely interchangeable characters and a killer creature that lacks any logic, even on its own terns, with its exact need for reflections changing from appearance to appearance. It doesn’t help either that the Mothman special effects are pretty rubbish, and it rather undermines any terror when it look like our protagonists are being attacked by CGI trash bags with glowing red eyes.

However I’m sure there are many of you out there who like low-rent horror, and it does just about fit the bill on that score, although if you’re hoping the gore will make up for the daftness of the rest of the film, there’s a bit of blood and guts, but not a vast amount. My personal Mothman Prophecy is that most people watching this will think it’s a bit rubbish.

Overall Verdict: Low rent horror which just about passes the time even if it’s interminably dumb.

WIN! A Good Old Fashioned Orgy On DVD – Three copies of the Jason Sudeikis comedy to give away

11th May 2012 By Tim Isaac

The raucous comedy A Good Old Fashioned Orgy is out to buy on May 14th, and we’ve got three copies of the Jason Sudeikis film to give away of DVD in this competition!

Sudeikis (Horrible Bosses, Hall Pass) is Eric, a thirty-something party animal famous among his close circle of friends for his lavish summer theme parties at his father’s swanky Hamptons pad. But when members of the crew start settling down, and Eric’s dad, played by Don Johnson (Miami Vice), announces plans to sell the beach house, Eric decides it’s time for one last bash to go out with a proverbial bang – a good old-fashioned orgy. The only obstacles to overcome are actually convincing each of his reluctant friends to join in on the bacchanal, and an inconveniently blossoming romance with the real estate agent played by Leslie Bibb (Talladega Nights) threatening to sell the house out from under him before the main event can even take place.

It’s great fun and if you’d like to try and win one of the three copies of A Good Old Fashioned Orgy on DVD that we’ve got to give away, sign in to the site below (or click here to register) and answer the multiple choice question (see below for more details on how to enter). The competition closes on May 24th, 2012, so get answering and good luck!
