Men In Black III Tops Memorial Day US Box Office – It takes $70 million over its first four days

29th May 2012 By Tim Isaac

The Avengers has finally been toppled from the top of the US box office, with Men In Black 3 taking $70 million over the Memorial Day weekend. It’s not quite the $75-$80 million that Sony was hoping for it’s not a bad start, and the studio certainly can’t be upset that worldwide the movie took just over $200 million, suggesting it’ll make back its hefty investment in the movie even if it doesn’t end up as profitable as the earlier films in the series.

The only other new entry in the top 10 is Chernobyl Diaries, which took a soft $9.3 million. Although not as much as some expected, as it’s a low budget flick, it could be worse.

Outside the top 10, Moonrise Kingdom got off to a great start, taking $669,000 on only four screens for an incredibly impressive per screen average of $167,000. It’s an incredibly good opening and suggests the Wes Anderson movie will do very well as it expands onto more screens over the coming week.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Men In Black 3 $70 $70
2 The Avengers $46.8 $523.5
3 Battleship $13.7 $47.2
4 The Dictator $11.7 $43.6
5 Dark Shadows $9.4 $64.8
6 Chernobyl Diaries $9.3 $9.3
7 What To Expect When You’re Expecting $8.8 $23.8
8 The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel $8.2 $18.4
9 The Hunger Games $2.8 $395.8
10 Think Like A Man $1.8 $88.6

Six new images has arrived from Django Unchained, courtesy of The Playlist, giving us a new look at Quentin Tarantino’s western, which stars Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz and Leonardo DiCaprio. They come shortly after the first footage was screened at Cannes, which got a very positive buzz, despite the slightly rough state of what was shown (the movie is still shooting).

The film sees Jamie Foxx’s Django escaping enslavement and with the help of Christoph Waltz’s bounty hunter heads off on a mission of revenge against those who wronged him. Most importantly Django wants to find his wife, who’s being kept by evil plantation and brothel owner Calvin Candie (DiCaprio).

Take a look at the new images above and below. The film will be in cinemas at Christmas.

New Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter Trailer – The President takes on the bloodsuckers

29th May 2012 By Tim Isaac

Although there’s still the possibility it’ll be a horrible mess, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is definitely one of this summer’s most intriguing flick. The trailers we’ve had certainly look cool! Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter reimagines the American president as an axe-wielding, highly trained vampire hunter. Seth Grahame-Smith’s book, on which the movie will be based, gives new context to Lincoln’s rise to the presidency as well as the American Civil War (which was fought because the vampires were in league with the slave owners), suggesting these events were a lot more paranormal than history tells us, and stemmed from Lincoln’s mother’s murder by a vampire when he was a child. The film hits UK cinemas August 2nd.

Rush: Lauda Vs. Hunt Featurette – First look at Ron Howard’s F1 flick

29th May 2012 By Tim Isaac

Although F1 isn’t that popular in the US, Ron Howard is hoping the lure of fast cars and womanising men will lure in an audience over there for Rush, which follows the 1970s rivalry on Nikki Lauda and James Hunt (Daniel Bruhl and Chris Hemsworth), the former a more staid, professional man, while the latter loved the high life and fast women. The featurette above first aired on the BBC and gives us our first look at the film, which is shooting now for release next year.
