Ashley Tisdale Headlining Scary Movie 5 – The High School Musical star takes over the franchise

5th June 2012 By Tim Isaac

It seems Anna Faris has had enough of the Scary Movie 5 franchise and won’t be returning, as Variety reports that Ashley Tisdale has been cast as the main lead in the latest installment in the highly anticipated, long-running franchise. It’ll start shooting this summer for release early next year.

Tisdale is probably best known for playing Sharpay Evans in High School Musical, as well as the spinoff film Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure. She also voices Candace in Phineas and Ferb and starred in the film Aliens in the Attic. Tisdale joins director Malcolm D. Lee who will be teaming up and working side by side with legendary comedy director David Zucker (Airplane!, Naked Gun) on the movie. Zucker wrote and directed Scary Movie 3 and Scary Movie 4 and is also co-writing and producing Scary Movie 5.

The first four Scary Movies grossed over $800 million worldwide, but it’s been six years since the last one, so it’ll be interesting to see if there’s still interest in the franchise when the movie is released next year.

Carter Beats The Devil Gets Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller – Going from 21 Jump Street to illusion

5th June 2012 By Tim Isaac

Ever since Glen David Gold’s novel Carter Beats The Devil was published in 2001 there’s been talk of turning it into a film, although it’s only in the last couple of years there’s been major movement on this front. Now 21 Jump Street directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller are in talks to helm the film for Warner Bros, according to THR.

The story is based on a real-life magician named Carter the Great, a popular illusionist in the 1920s. The story sees Carter performing a trick for President Warren G. Harding, but when the Commander-in-Chief is found dead, the magician must go on the run to clear his name. The story also features real-life figures such as TV inventor Philo T. Farnsworth, Harry Houdini, and The Marx Brothers.

The novel was originally set up at Paramount back in 2002, with Tom Cruise was attached to play the title character. There’s no news on when this latest attempt to mount the movie might shoot.

Ridley Scott Takes On Moses – He says it’s going to happen

5th June 2012 By Tim Isaac

There’s is no one alive who like developing movies as much as Ridley Scott. He currently has over 30 films in various stages, a few of which he’ll make, some of which will go to other directors while many will never see the light of day. Now we’ve got one more to add to the list, as while out promoting Prometheus, he’s told Esquire Magazine that he’s working on a film based on the life of Moses.

He says, “I’ve got something else in the works. I’m already doing it. It’s called ‘Moses.’ Seriously, seriously. It’s going to happen. I probably shouldn’t have let that slip out. I’m not supposed to say anything. It’s definitely in the cards, though. What’s interesting to me about Moses isn’t the big stuff that everybody knows. It’s things like his relationship with Ramses [II, the pharaoh]. I honestly wasn’t paying attention in school when I was told the story of Moses. Some of the details of his life are extraordinary.”

It’s not the only Moses film in the works, as there’s also Gods and Kings, which Steven Spielberg is putting together, and another at Fox (although it’s possible this is the one Scott is now involved with). While Scott says it’s going to happen, that doesn’t mean he’ll end up directing, as he could just produce. It won’t happen soon either, as he’s going to be busy shooting The Counselor in the next few months, and it’s likely Fox will be agitating for a Prometheus 2.

Mads Mikkelsen Playing Hannibal On TV – The Cannes Best Actor takes on the killer

5th June 2012 By Tim Isaac

The future of Hannibal Lecter is on TV, as series based on both Clarice Starling and Hannibal himself (as well as FBI agent Will Graham) are in development. The latter is being shepherded to the small screen by Pushing Daisies creator, Bryan Fuller, who has now found his serial killer in the forms of Mads Mikkelsen.

The actor won Best Actor at Cannes just a few weeks ago for The Hunt, but is probably best known as the villain in Casino Royale. Now he’s going to TV to play Hannibal Lecter in the NBC show, according to Deadline. Will Graham is yet to be cast, but the show will focus on his hunt for the Lecter, expanding on events touched upon in Red Dragon and The Silence Of The Lambs.

David Slade (Hard Candy, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) will direct the pilot, which is expected to start airing early next year, with NBC having already ordered 13 episodes. Whether Lecter will work on TV is another matter, especially considering US network television will limit the violence and terror it will be able to show.

Snow White Tops US Box Office – Taking a decent $56 million

4th June 2012 By Tim Isaac

Prometheus doesn’t reach the US until next weekend, leaving the box office clear for Snow White And The Huntsman to take a big bite out of the US box office with $56 million in its first three days. While that’s not exceptional, for a film that isn’t a sequel it’s certainly not a bad start at all, especially considering it’s ahead of the first three day take of last week’s Men In Black III.

It probably helped that it was the only big new release, although the likes of The Avengers had decent holdovers too. Indeed The Avengers has now taken over $550 million at the US box and with more than $1.3 billion worldwide, has overtaken the final Harry Potter movie to become the third highest grossing movie ever.

The only other new entry in the US top 10 was the Mexican historical epic For Greater Glory, which took a rather tepid $1.8 million. Take a look below for the full top 10 for the weekend of June 1st-3rd.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Show White And The Huntsman $56.2 $56.2
2 Men In Black 3 $29.3 $112.3
3 The Avengers $20.2 $552.7
4 Battleship $4.8 $55.1
5 The Dictator $4.7 $64.8
6 The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel $4.6 $9.3
7 What To Expect When You’re Expecting $4.4 $23.8
8 Dark Shadows $3.8 $18.4
9 Chernobyl Diaries $3.0 $395.8
10 For Greater Glory $1.8 $88.6
