Casa de mi Padre – Will Ferrell goes Spanish and silly

8th June 2012 By Tim Isaac

Whether it’s a salute to cheap Mexican melodrama, a belated cash-in on the modern ‘Grindhouse’ phenomenon or just an excuse to act like a tit in another language, Will Ferrell’s latest is a weird, sometimes wonderful and often surreal comedy western.

Ferrell stars as a loyal but dumb Mexican ranch hand, Armando, who struggles to gain the respect of his father while struggling to keep the business afloat. When Armando’s successful businessman brother (Diego Luna) returns to the nest with his beautiful new fiancé it seems as though the family’s money worries are over. However, Armando soon learns that his brother’s business dealings haven’t exactly been above board, which has in turn incurred the wrath of renowned mobster, Onza (Gael Garcia Bernal).

With his family in danger and his love for his brother’s fiancé blooming, Armando must man up and take on the bad guys. And all this while speaking pretty good Spanish.

Yep, the biggest surprise for Ferrell fans is that Casa de mi Padre is entirely in Spanish (albeit with a few English lines thrown in – and it’s subtitled of course), with Ferrell doing a half decent job of learning the Spanish dialogue (in a month apparently) and delivering his lines in a fairly inoffensive and curiously heartfelt way.

We’re not sure if Will’s Anchorman fanbase will approve (what were the studio execs supposed to do with this film exactly?), but one thing that Casa does share with its Ferrell predecessors is the inane silliness. Cheap sets, ludicrous dialogue, mechanical white tigers and the weirdest bare bottom sex scene provide some solid laughs for Ferrell followers and those tickled by gags of the Mel Brooks variety.

But Casa is a far stranger film than some might expect, less Blazing Saddles and more El Topo: a ‘midnight movie’ you can enjoy in the afternoon. See it to believe.

Overall Verdict: A weird and sometimes wonderful comedy that falls somewhere between satire, spoof and surreal spiritual journey.

Jamie Foxx On For White House Down – He may be the US President

7th June 2012 By Tim Isaac

Sony only bought the screenplay for White House Down a couple of months ago, but they’ve already attached Roland Emmerich to direct and are moving fast to get the film in cinemas as quickly as possible. Now they’re starting to cast the movie, with Variety reporting that Jamie Foxx is being eyed to play the president in the film.

The story is described as Die Hard set in the White House, concentrating on a paramilitary takeover of the President’s official residence. Not too many other details about the script are known, except that Channing Tatum is set to play a Secret Service agent who leaps into action to protect the Commander In Chief.

Foxx is yet to receive an offer for the movie, but Emmerich is very keen on him and it’s thought the actor is open to the movie.

Michael Goldenberg Writing Wonder Woman – The Princess may finally get a stand-alone movie

7th June 2012 By Tim Isaac

While Batman and Superman have had numerous movies, it’s slightly odd that the character who is probably DC’s other biggest propety has never lit up the big screen. However now it appears the company is once more looking to adapt Wonder Woman for a cinematic outing.

The news comes in a Variety report about DC’s plans for a Justice League movie (which we reported on yesterday), which drops in the info that Michael Goldenberg has been hired to write a Wonder Woman script. There’s no news on the direction the film might take or if it will specifically be linked into the plans for Justice League.

Part of the problem with Wonder Woman is that some elements of it may potentially seem a bit silly for the big screen, such as her invisible plane, Amazon origins and how her abilities work. There’s also the fact Hollywood is still shy about female action heroes. However with such a long-standing, popular character, they should be able to overcome that, and perhaps Goldenberg, who’s co-wrote Green Lantern, is the man to do it.

The Variety report also mentions that Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green are still hard at work on a Flash screenplay for Greg Berlanti to possibly direct. And of course, after Chris Nolan finishes his Batman trilogy, it’s likely DC will look to reboot that character. It certainly seems the company has realised how far it is behind the curveball compared to Marvel and is doing something about it.

Matthew Modine Joins Steve Jobs Biopic – Playing the CEO of Apple, John Sculley

7th June 2012 By Tim Isaac

A Steve Jobs biopic, simply titled Jobs, is already shooting, but it’s still adding to its cast, as THR reports that Matthew Modine has joined the movie, playing John Sculley, who Jobs recruited to lead Apple in 1983 and famously ‘fired’ the co-founder of the company two years later. Sculley remained as Apple CEO from 1983 to 1993.

Modine comments, “It’s my feeling – and I think there’s a lot of people who feel – that had John Sculley not fired Steve Jobs from Apple Computers and [let] Steve go on the journey that he did when he was away from Apple Computers, that we wouldn’t be speaking about Steve Jobs today.”

Ashton Kutcher is playing Jobs himself, with the film tracing the man’s story from the 1970s through to the 21st Century. Joshua Michael Stern (Swing Vote) directs, with Josh Gad starring as Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. It’s due out this autumn, rushing into cinemas to get a good head start on a rival, slightly more official Jobs film, which is based on the acclaimed biography by Walter Isaacson and with a screenplay by The Social Network Oscar winner Aaron Sorkin.

Wreck-It Ralph Trailer – Disney’s latest animation goes videogame

7th June 2012 By Tim Isaac

Now this looks like it might be fun! While we’ve seen pics from Wreck-It Ralph, it’s been difficult to tell whether it was just a good concept or if it could actually be a really good movie – the trailer certainly suggests the latter. Here’s the synopsis: ‘Walt Disney Animation Studios and Emmy®-winning director Rich Moore (TV’s “The Simpsons,” “Futurama”) take moviegoers on a hilarious, arcade-game-hopping journey in “Wreck-It Ralph.” Ralph (voice of John C. Reilly, “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby,” “Step Brothers”) is tired of being overshadowed by Fix-It Felix (voice of Jack McBrayer, “30 Rock”), the “good guy” star of their game who always gets to save the day. But after decades doing the same thing and seeing all the glory go to Felix, Ralph decides he’s tired of playing the role of a bad guy.He takes matters into his own massive hands and sets off on a game-hopping journey across the arcade through every generation of video games to prove he’s got what it takes to be a hero. On his quest, he meets the tough-as-nails Sergeant Calhoun (voice of Jane Lynch, TV’s “Glee”) from the first-person action game Hero’s Duty. But it’s the feisty misfit Vanellope von Schweetz (voice of Sarah Silverman, “The Sarah Silverman Program”) from the candy-coated cart racing game, Sugar Rush, whose world is threatened when Ralph accidentally unleashes a deadly enemy that threatens the entire arcade. Will Ralph realise his dream and save the day before it’s too late? “Wreck-It Ralph” crashes onto the big screen in February 2013, in Disney Digital 3D™ in select UK cinemas.’
