Will Angelina Jolie Direct Fifty Shades Of Grey? – She could take on the hit erotic book

8th June 2012 By Tim Isaac

At the moment it’s nothing more than rumour, but Deadline suggests that following her directorial debut, In The Land Of Blood And Honey, Angelina’s next outing as a director may be an adaptation of the erotic novel, Fifty Shades Of Grey.

Universal owns the rights to the book, and they deny the Jolie connection, but Deadline suggests it could happen, even if it won’t happen soon, as Jolie will be busy making Maleficent for much of the rest of the year. The books, written by E.L. James, have become a pop culture sensation in the States, focusing on a woman and her explicit, kinky relationship with the title character.

Here’s a brief synopsis of the books, ‘Fifty Shades of Grey follows the story of 27-year-old billionaire Christian Grey and 22-year-old virgin college student Anastasia Steele, who develop a relationship steeped in bondage, S&M, domination and submission. The sequels Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed continue their story. The erotically-charged novels have been referred to as “mommy porn” in The New York Times.’

Bizarrely it started out as a piece of Twilight fan-fiction! At the moment the Jolie connection is very loose, but it’s not impossible she will end up directing.

Cary Fukunaga Takes On Stephen King’s It – The plan is two make in into two movies

8th June 2012 By Tim Isaac

In the 80s and early 90s you couldn’t move for films based on Stephen King stories, but things have been fairly quiet for the past few years. However there’s been a resurgence of interest, with remakes of the likes of Carrie and Pet Sematary in the works, while Warner is working on The Stand and Ron Howard still hopes to make The Dark Tower. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg of the King-based films in development.

There’s also been talk of taking the author’s novel It to the big screen, and now THR reports that Warner Bros. has found a director for the project, Cary Fukunaga, who most recently made Jane Eyre. It’s a bit of a departure for the director, and a major project, as the idea at the moment it to turn the hefty and densely plotted tome into two movies.

The story follows a group of kids called the Losers Club that encounter a creature called It, which preys on children and whose favorite form is that of a sadistic clown called Pennywise (famously played by Tim Curry in a 1990 two-part TV version). When the creature resurfaces years later, the now-grown kids are called upon to regroup again, this time as adults, even though they have no memory of the first battle.

There’s no news on when the film might shoot.

Twilight’s Ashley Greene Heads For CBGB – She takes on one of the leads as Lisa Kristal

8th June 2012 By Tim Isaac

The increasingly massive cast of CBGB has got one of its final pieces, with Twilight actress Ashley Greene taking on one of the leads, playing Lisa Kristal, according to Variety, in the movie about the famed New York club that helped give birth to punk in the US.

The film is a biopic of Hilly Kristal (Alan Rickman), who wanted to start a club for country, bluegrass and blues (the CBGB of the club’s name) but found it difficult to get acts, and so ended up allowing the likes of The Ramones and Blondie to play, helping give punk a foothold in America. Lisa Kristal, Hilly’s daughter, was often in conflict with her father, and ended up taking over from his as the club’s business manager. A law-school graduate, Lisa was able to help keep the club afloat until it closed its doors for the final time in 2008.

Along with Rickman and Greene, Joel David Moore, Julian Acosta and Steven Schub will play three of the Ramones; Malin Akerman is Debbie Harry; Mickey Sumner is Patti Smith; Rupert Grint will be Dead Boys guitarist Cheetah Chrome; and Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins is Iggy Pop. It’s quite a cast, with a few more roles of musicians who played the club still to be cast. Shooting begins later this month, with Randall Miller directing.

Isaac Newton Action Hero! – Rob Cohen plans to give the scientist a makeover

8th June 2012 By Tim Isaac

By most accounts, Isaac Newton was a genius of the highest order but was also a bit of an ass. He was notoriously difficult to get on with, not particularly social, got into petty and bitter disputes with other mathematicians, and it’s said he made his books deliberately difficult to understand, so he wouldn’t be bothered by amateur scientists, as he knew they wouldn’t be able to get through his tomes.

However it appears The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor director Rob Cohen wants to give him a bit of a makeover, as THR says Cohen is developing a movie that would turn Newton into an action hero! While best known for his work in the fields of physics and mathematics, the movie will focus on Newton’s time as the head of the British Mint, where he helped track down counterfeiters and developed a new standard for money that made it more difficult for criminals to fake cash.

The presumption is the movie will have a bit of a Sherlock Holmes tone and will pretty much ignore the historical Newton in favour of a more dashing, action-packed one. Cohen will write the script and also help develop a graphic novel based on the concept.
