First Dredd Poster Hits – The man of justice comes out of the shadows

9th June 2012 By Tim Isaac

There’s been a sense that there have been a few problems with Dredd, not least because it was filmed well over a year ago, and its release has been delayed from last December to this September 7th. Mix that with reports director Pete Travis’ input got restricted in post-production and there are reasons to worry. However there’s still plenty of promise, and if it can get close to being as cool as this first poster (which debuted on JoBlo), we should be okay.

Dredd takes us to the wild streets of Mega City One, the lone oasis of quasi-civilisation on Cursed Earth. Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is the most feared of elite Street Judges, with the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot – if necessary. It’s a tough world, and one that’s hopefully going to be better than when Stallone was in charge.

Lena Headey, Olivia Thirlby and Domhnall Gleeson also star, with Pete Travis (Vantage Point) directing and Alex Garland on scripting duties (and it’s the last of these that should give us the most hope). Take a look at a couple of new images below.

First Look At Idris Elba In Pacific Rim – Take a look at the Guillermo Del Toro flick

9th June 2012 By Tim Isaac

If you were hoping the first image from Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim would reveal some of the promised giant robots, you’re out of luck, as it’s actually a rather quiet image of Idris Elba wearing a black suit and carrying a helmet.

It’s not particularly revealing, especially as it doesn’t give much hint at the unique style Del Toro is known for. But it’s still our first look, and timesly as Elba is currently in cinema in Prometheus!

As well as Elba, Pacific Rim stars Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, and Charlie Day, Pacific Rim and is due to to open July 12, 2013. Here’s the synopsis: ‘When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) – who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.’ (Image via MovieHole)

Mystery Science Theatre 3000: The Movie (Blu-ray) – Trapped in space watching This Island Earth

9th June 2012 By Tim Isaac

Mystery Science Theatre 3000 or MST3K as it has been thankfully abbreviated to is an interesting concept, one that this reviewer will tell you is not essentially a film but rather a wisecrack heavy commentary by two robots and a man trapped in space against their own free will.

Originally starting life as a television show in the late 80s, the show soon became rather popular and ran for an impressive 11 years following a similar premise to the movie. Unlike most transfers from television to cinema, MST3K doesn’t really set it up for a new audience, mainly because considering how simplistic the story behind it is there isn’t really any need. A human by the name of Mike is being held captive by the evil Dr. Clayton Forrester aboard the satellite of love with only a handful of robots for company. In order to break their, wills Dr. Forrester shows them an awful B-movie by the name of This Island Earth and the film then plays out as a commentary with Mike and the robots, Tom Servo and Crow T. Bot, wise-cracking and generally mocking the awful film they’re watching.

For someone who has never watched the series itself – which will be most people in the UK – the film may come off as a little childish. The humour is pretty bad throughout, similar to what a group of mates would most probably do watching a bunch of bad movies. Wisecracking at the clunky acting or shoddy special effects, Mike and his robots chums heckle the film throughout, pointing out the plot holes and problems with it as a means of survival, of which This Island Earth has a plenty!

Unlike the original series, the film actually plays out shorter and the humour itself isn’t as quick witted, as most msties (MST3K fans) point out, so it is intriguing why the idea of a feature film was put forward in the first place. It seems as if it may have been an attempt to try and fill a gap between seasons and a chance for real msties to see it on the big screen as new comers to the world of Mike and his robot buddies would have most probably avoided this.

Despite this, MST3K is rather enjoyable. You have to smile at how clunky and homemade everything looks within it, many of the robots look like they’re made out of household appliances, also the concept itself is something B movie fans can really get into, many people watch B movies to take a stab at how awful and poor they are and with MST3K you now have a bunch of wisecracking buddies to do it with, you can’t help fall for its charm.

The Blu-ray release is somewhat barebones, only having a handful of extras and not really bringing anything to grab the attention of previous or new fans.

Overall Verdict: Not for everyone, MST3K is perfect late night viewing, although I would recommend going back to the show rather than watching the movie first, as it is definitely the weaker of the two.

Isaac Newton Action Hero! – Rob Cohen plans to give the scientist a makeover

8th June 2012 By Tim Isaac

By most accounts, Isaac Newton was a genius of the highest order but was also a bit of an ass. He was notoriously difficult to get on with, not particularly social, got into petty and bitter disputes with other mathematicians, and it’s said he made his books deliberately difficult to understand, so he wouldn’t be bothered by amateur scientists, as he knew they wouldn’t be able to get through his tomes.

However it appears The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor director Rob Cohen wants to give him a bit of a makeover, as THR says Cohen is developing a movie that would turn Newton into an action hero! While best known for his work in the fields of physics and mathematics, the movie will focus on Newton’s time as the head of the British Mint, where he helped track down counterfeiters and developed a new standard for money that made it more difficult for criminals to fake cash.

The presumption is the movie will have a bit of a Sherlock Holmes tone and will pretty much ignore the historical Newton in favour of a more dashing, action-packed one. Cohen will write the script and also help develop a graphic novel based on the concept.

360 Trailer – First promo for Fernando Meirelles’ ensemble tale

8th June 2012 By Tim Isaac

It’s taken a while to get 360 from its festival debuts last September and October to its big screen release, but it’s due to hit UK cinemas on August 10th, and the first trailer is now here. Fernando Meirelles’ drama is inspired by Arthur Schnitzler’s classic La Ronde, and combines a modern and dynamic roundelay of stories into one, linking characters from different cities and countries in a vivid  tale of love in the 21st century. Starting in Vienna, the film beautifully weaves through Paris, London, Bratislava, Rio, Denver and Phoenix, with cast including Anthony Hopkins, Rachel Weisz, Jude Law and Ben Foster.
