Disney Takes On The Stuff Of Legend – Adapting the ‘Toy Story meets Narnia’ graphic novel

13th June 2012 By Tim Isaac

It’s surprising that no studio has snapped up the rights to The Stuff Of Legend before, as it sounds the sort of thing Hollywood would be all over. However now Disney has signed on to adapt the graphic novel as a live-action/CG film, with Pete Candeland attached to write the screenplay, according to Deadline.

Written by Mike Raicht and Brian Smith and illustrated by Charles Paul Wilson III, The Stuff of Legend graphic novels depict an epic battle between the Boogeyman and a boy’s beloved toys, with some describing is at a kind of darker version Toy Story, but with Narnia-type element. In the tale, The Boogeyman lurches out of his Dark Realm into 1944 Brooklyn, lurching from a boy’s closet and dragging him by his ankles into his twisted kingdom.

From there, the boy’s toys decide to mount a rescue mission, but as they cross the border of the Dark Realm, they are transformed from cuddly playthings to full-sized beings with functioning weaponry, like guns for the cowboys and soldier, swords for the knights, and ferocious teeth and claws for the teddy bear.

It could certainly make a great movie, which sounds like it could have a touch of Labyrinth about it.

Django Unchained UK Trailer – Another look at Quentin Tarantino’s western

13th June 2012 By Tim Isaac

The first trailer for Django Unchained arrived last week and now a new UK version has shown up online, giving us another great look at Quentin Tarantino’s movie. Here’s the synopsis: ‘Set in the South two years before the Civil War, Django Unchained stars Academy Award-winner Jamie Foxx as Django, a slave whose brutal history with his former owners lands him face-to-face with German-born bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz). Schultz is on the trail of the murderous Brittle brothers, and only Django can lead him to his bounty. The unorthodox Schultz acquires Django with a promise to free him upon the capture of the Brittles – dead or alive.

‘Success leads Schultz to free Django, though the two men choose not to go their separate ways. Instead, Schultz seeks out the South’s most wanted criminals with Django by his side. Honing vital hunting skills, Django remains focused on one goal: finding and rescuing Broomhilda (Kerry Washington), the wife he lost to the slave trade long ago.

‘Django and Schultz’s search ultimately leads them to Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio), the proprietor of “Candyland,” an infamous plantation where slaves are groomed by trainer Ace Woody (Kurt Russell) to battle each other for sport. Exploring the compound under false pretenses, Django and Schultz arouse the suspicion of Stephen (amuel L. Jackson), Candie’s trusted house slave. Their moves are marked, and a treacherous organization closes in on them. If Django and Schultz are to escape with Broomhilda, they must choose between independence and solidarity, between sacrifice and survival.’

First Look At Breaking Dawn Part 2’s Renesnee – Bella & Edward’s kid is growing up fast!

13th June 2012 By Tim Isaac

The first image of Renesmee from The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 has arrived, via EW. At the end of Breaking Dawn Part 1, Renesmee was a newborn, but as you can see from the image above, where she peeps out from behind her mother, she’s growing ridiculously fast! But that’s what happens when you test the uncharted territories of having a half-vampire, half human child.

As this is Twilight, no one is allowed to smile, even for a family portrait, but then with everyone from the wolfpack to the Volturi not being too chuffed about Renesmee’s existence, they probably don’t have much to be cheerful about. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 hits cinema on November 16th.

Adam Sandler Developing Tonka Trucks Movie – Alongside Sony Animation

12th June 2012 By Tim Isaac

Tonka Trucks have been around for 65 years, and now the Hasbro brand is planning to bring its Tonka toughness to the big screen in an animated motion picture to be produced by Sony Pictures Animation, Hasbro and Happy Madison Productions, according to THR.

The new Tonka project isn’t the only link between Sony Pictures and Hasbro, as they recently announced they’re developing movies based on Risk and Candy Land together. Candy Land is also a Happy Madison project.

Happy Madison is of course Adam Sandler’s production company, and while it isn’t now how personally he’ll be involved with the film, it’s believed he’ll produce the movie at least. Fred Wolf, who is a regular writer for Sandler (he wrote Grown Ups, amongst other others), is the man tasked with finding a way to make the Tonka products work as a film.

Chris Hemsworth Goes In the Heart of the Sea – A tale inspired by Moby Dick

12th June 2012 By Tim Isaac

Thanks to the success of The Avengers and Snow White and the Huntsman, Chris Hemsworth is just about the hottest new actor around at the moment. He’s now attached to star in the hot property In the Heart of the Sea, according to Deadline.

Charles Leavitt wrote the script, adapted from Nathanial Philbrick’s non-fiction book of the same name, which is based on the true events that inspired Herman Melville to write Moby Dick. The story revolves around a Nantucket whaling ship that was destroyed by a sperm whale in 1820. Only eight crew members were rescued alive, after being lost at sea for 90 days.

The project has been in development for several years, with directors such as Barry Levinson and Edward Zwick attached to direct at one point or another, although current no one is at the helm. There’s no studio currently attached, but DreamWorks reportedly has the inside track on landing the project, although there are still other studios vying for it.

Idina Menzel Joins Disney’s Frozen – Alongside Kristen Bell in the animated movie

12th June 2012 By Tim Isaac

Idina Menzel is a huge name on the Broadway stage, but she’s never made as much of an impact on screen, despite popping up in the likes of Rent, Enchanted and playing Rachel’s birth mother in Glee. However now her voice will be getting a major outing in Disney’s Frozen, which is inspired by the fairytale The Snow Queen.

Slated for release November 2013 and directed by Chris Buck (Tarzan, Surf’s Up), Frozen will also feature Kristen Bell as Anna, a young dreamer about to take the adventure of a lifetime, with Menzel as Elsa, the Snow Queen.

In Frozen, a prophecy traps a kingdom in eternal winter, so Anna (Bell) must team up with Kristoff, a daring mountain man, on the grandest of journeys to find the Snow Queen (Menzel) and put an end to the icy spell. Encountering Everest-like extremes, mystical creatures and magic at every turn, Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom from destruction.

The movie will feature original songs by Broadway greats Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez. Robert Lopez is a three-time Tony Award-winner thanks to The Book of Mormon, which was co-written with Trey Parker and Matt Stone (South Park), and the musical Avenue Q, which ran for six years on Broadway and four years in London’s West End. Lopez teamed with wife Kristen Anderson-Lopez, whose Drama Desk-winning show In Transit is Broadway-bound, to write original songs for 2011’s Winnie the Pooh, a stage version of Finding Nemo and a new musical called Up Here.
