In the last few years, Hollywood has had a growing interest in biblical movies, despite a very mixed record at the box office. That continues with the news, via Deadline, that Tom Cruise is attached to play Old Testament patriarch Methuselah in an upcoming movie.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales co-director Joachim Rønning is set to helm the film, with Harry Potter producer David Heyman helping to oversee the project.
Methuselah is best known for being the oldest person in the Bible, which says he lived 969 years. The film will apparently cover the man’s entire life, which apparently helped him gain a “set of unparalleled survival skills.” Methuselah is actually only mentioned once in the Bible, which gives us his very long lifespan, and the fact that he’s Noah grandfather.
Outside the Bible, Methuselah is said have found out about the Great Flood from Enoch, and then helped his grandson build the Ark and warn people of the coming catastrophe. It’s also said that he had a great sword that conquered evils and ghosts. At the moment it’s not known which of these elements the movie will incorporate.
