Steven Spielberg has been attached to a few things since Lincoln, but nothing that’s so come together so far (Robopocalypse came close, but then got delayed). Now the bearded one has added another possibility, as Variety reports he has signed on to produce and direct the religious drama, The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara.
The film will reunite him with Lincoln and Munich screenwriter Tony Kushner, who is adapting David Kertzer book that tells the true story of a seven year old Italian-Jewish boy, who in 1858 was removed from his parents by the authority of the Papal States, who raised him as a Catholic.
He grew up to become a priest in the Augustinian order.
Kushner is apparently at the early stages of writing the script, so it’s not know if the movie will be Spielberg’s next project.
It’s possible he’ll still make Robopocalypse next, which just received a new rewrite from Steven Zaillian. The other main alternative is the historical drama Montezuma, although that project isn’t likely to be ready for production in the near future.
