While Dolphin Tale wasn’t a massive hit, it’s done well enough that Alcon Entertainment has decided it’s worth making a sequel to the 2011 family film. They’re in the final stages of developing Dolphin Tale 2, and now it’s been revealed that Warner Bros has set a September 19th, 2014 US release date.
The original cast is in talks to return for the sequel, including Harry Connick Jr., Ashley Judd, Morgan Freeman, Kris Kristofferson and others. Charles Martin Smith, who directed Dolphin Tale, is set to helm the sequel from his own script.
Dolphin Tale 2 will tell another true story inspired by the life of Winter, a dolphin found trapped in a net, who had to have her tale amputated. However she found a new lease of life when she got a prosthetic replacement. The new film will also involve a baby dolphin named Hope who was rescued by the Clearwater Marine Aquarium in 2010.
Winter, who still resides at the Aquarium, played herself in the original film and returns in Dolphin Tale 2 and Hope will play herself in the sequel.
