For years and years, between every Martin Scorsese movie, there have been rumours his next film will be Silence. As a result, even when it was officially announced a couple of weeks ago that he was finally going to make the movie, some were sceptical. However now the director has started putting the cast together, suggesting he really is going to film it this time.
The first actor onboard is Amazing Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield has signed on for the lead role in thes adaptation of Shusaku Endo’s novel. Ken Watanabe and Issei Ogata will co-star.
Set in the 17th Century, the story follows Father Rodrigues (Andrew Garfield), a Portuguese Jesuit priest who travels to Japan to confront his mentor, after rumours surface that he has abandoned the church. Ken Watanabe will portray Father Rodrigues’ Japanese interpreter. It isn’t known who Issei Ogata will play.
Martin Scorsese co-wrote the screenplay alongside Jay Cocks (Gangs of New York), with location scouting currently underway before production begins this summer.
