Tom Cruise’s superstar power seemed like it was waning between Mission: Impossible III and IV, as he couldn’t get a solo hit, and neither Rock Of Ages nor Jack Reacher found much love from audiences.
It seems he’s decided that sci-fi is the way to go, as Oblivion is currently hitting cinemas, he’s been shooting the interstellar war movie All You Need Is Kill, and now he’s signed on to star in the sci-fi adaptation Yukikaze for Warner Bros, according to Deadline.
The story is based on Chohel Kamayashi’s sci-fi novel series (which was adapted into a successful anime) set in the early 21st Century, three decades after an alien force known as JAM invaded Earth through a portal over Antarctica. The humans form an elite combat force to take out the alien threat on their home planet.
Erwin Stoff and Tom Lassally are producing through their 3Arts company, alongside Viz Media’s Jason Hoffs. No writer or director has been attached to the project at this time. Is Cruise investing in too much sci-fi, or is he making smart moves to ensure he stays near the top of the a-list? We’ll have to wait and see.
