Rose McGowan plays a radio shrink who moves back to her childhood home following the death of her father. Upon returning to her old neighbourhood, she discovers that everybody is being terrorised by the local paperboy – a psychopath that used to torment her dad. Naturally, he begins stalking her and before you know it, we’ve got a deadly battle of wits on our hands.
If it sounds a bit silly on paper then you’ll be stunned by how utterly dumb the film itself is.
Rose McGowan plays her role pretty well as the headstrong female celeb who won’t let herself become a victim, while Daniel Ross Owens is somewhat creepy as the villainous news peddler. The only problem is that everything is played out so idiotically that it becomes almost impossible to enjoy or even stay awake. The villain has potentially murdered people, frequently breaks into houses and threatens the locals and yet they don’t report him to the authorities or even attempt to move house.
Even when the law does get involved, they do sod all to curb his reign of terror. Similarly stupid, there are multiple times when someone could easily kill the little prick but for some reason they don’t. By the time the final act comes around, we’re almost back into generic slasher territory minus the whodunit aspect, which would have at least provided something to mull over throughout the otherwise thrill-less thriller.
The disc itself is pretty poor too as there’s nothing worth watching in the way of extras – just a ‘making of’ and a trailer. It makes for a craptacular disc for a poor horror flick. Very disappointing.
Overall verdict: A stupid, generic thriller that never even remotely threatens to deliver a mental workout. Then again, what can you expect from the director of Jeepers Creepers.
