Ouija has been through the development ringer. Initially planned as a medium budget family friendly film, it was then turned into a mega-expensive action adventure (with McG directing), before that fell through. Then it appeared to have been canned completely, before re-emerging earlier this year in the form it should have been all along, as a small-budget creep-fest.
Now The Possession and Knowing writers Juliet Snowden and Stiles White have signed on to rewrite and direct Ouija for Universal Pictures. The budget has been slashed from $100 million to $5 million, so it’s not likely we’re going to be getting anything too spectacular here, but it’s enough to play with the creepiness of the Ouija board, with reports they’re hoping to follow the high-concept, low-budget philosophy that’s worked so well for Paranormal Activity.
It isn’t known when production will start, although the producers are aiming for a 2013 release. (Source: Variety)
