The Flowers Of War is an interesting movie, as it could be a sign on things to come. In recent years Hollywood studios have been trying to get into business in China, seeing it as a massive market that’s growing exponentially, but The Flowers Of War does things the other way around, with Chinese studios bringing in Hollywood talent for a big budget flick. Christian Bale stars, presumably in the hope the film will have global appeal, and top Hollywood effects studios have also been engaged to ensure the big-budget movie is spectacular. The film sees Bale as a priest caught up in the events following the fall on Nanjing to the Japanese in 1937, with the plot revolving around a groups of Chinese sex workers who volunteer to replace university students as forced escorts for invading soldiers. Taking in the Nanjing massacre, it promises to be a powerful and somewhat controversial movie (Nanjing is still a fiery issue in Chinese-Japaense relations) from Hero helmer Yang Zhimou.
