The Wolverine should have already been in the can by now, but various things, including the Japanese earthquake and losing director Darren Aronofsky have meant it won’t now start filming until next February. It appears there’s still a bit of work to do before that though, as Variety reports screenwriter Mark Bomback (Total Recall, Jack the Giant Killer) has come aboard to rewrite the script for The Wolverine.
Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects) wrote the original screenplay, which follows Hugh Jackman’s title character to Japan, where he will search for more clues about his origin. There, he encounters the criminal underworld and a new love interest. James Mangold is directing, which will reunite him with Hugh Jackman for the first time since the romantic comedy Kate & Leopold.
The movie is aiming for a spring 2012 start in Vancouver, but despite the fact some of it will be shot in Canada, Variety says the cast will be all Japanese and Japanese-American actors except for Hugh Jackman and a newly-expanded character named Viper, whos the Caucasian secretary for Japans Minister of Justice.
