In the last few months, it hasn’t been clear whether Oblivion, from TRON: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski, was changing its name to the rather more positive Horizons or not. Now it appears that it is indeed going by the new title (although Variety still refers to it as a working title, with the issues apparently surrounding whether the original name was too close to the videogame, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion), and that with Tom Cruise installed in the main role, they’re now looking for a female lead to star alongside him.
This weekend a range of actresses will test for the role, including Jessica Chastain, Olivia Wilde, Brit Marling, Noomi Rapace and Olga Kurylenko, with other also under consideration.
Cruise will play Jack, a man who lives in the clouds above a broken Earth, who heads to the surface to repair robot drones that keep the planet safe from an alien race that has virtually wiped out humanity. There are apparently two main female roles the women are trying out for – Jack’s right-hand-man, Victoria, who acts as his eyes and ears on his repair mission, and Julia, who was his fiancee before the alien invasion.
Oblivion is one of the few major movie to survive Universal’s purge of projects, which has included dropping At The Mountains Of Madness, which Cruise was also due to star in, and in the last few days setting both Ouisa and Wicked Lovely free. Horizons is currently set for a July 19th, 2013 release.
