Presumably when they called their film, ‘The Worst Movie Ever’, they hoped people would see it as being tongue-in-cheek and go into thinking it would be cheesy fun. However it appears audiences have taken it literally, as the film has had what many believe is the worst opening weekend in history on the US, making just $11. That means only one person bought a ticket.
Admittedly, it only screened twice, at midnight at the Laemmle Sunset 5 in Los Angeles, but the fact that none of the cast and crew even took their mum to have a look certainly says something.
If the $11 figure from BoxOfficeMojo is correct, it’s the worst opening in history, beating out the infamous first weekend of the Katherine Heigl flick Zzyzx Road, which only made $20 when it opened (although that at least had the excuse that the only screenings were in Denver and they only happened due to Screen Actors Guild contractual obligations).
However there’s a good chance this is the best thing that could have happened to the movie. If it had made a few hundred dollars the film would almost definitely have disappeared into oblivion, but there’s a good chance this notoriety will make fans of cult bad films like The Room and Birdemic seek it out just to see what all the fuss is about, ensuring that in the end it’ll make more money just because of its disastrous opening.
Take a look below for the trailer (and then prepare to wash your eyes out), for a movie that looks like its going for tongue-in-cheek silliness, but actually appears to be beyond awful.
