For years and years, they’ve been saying Ghostbusters 3 is coming, but it never actually seems to get here. However in the last year or so, things have gotten closer than they ever have before, with a script in the works and a seeming determination on the part of many involved to actually get it done. So where are we now?
Well, Dan Aykroyd recently appeared on Dennis Miller’s radio program where he dropped some interesting tidbits about Ghostbusters 3.
One of the main sticking points with the film is that due to contracts for Ghostbusters 2, all of the main cast and director Ivan Reitman have to sign off on the script for any sequel. Bill Murray has been blowing hot and cold on the idea and according to Dan Aykroyd, they are still unsure if Bill Murray will sign on yet, although it seems they feel they’ll be able to go forward even if Murray decides against actually starring. Here’s what Aykroyd had to say, “Yes, we will be doing the movie, and hopefully with Mr. Murray. That is our hope. We have an excellent script, but what we have to remember is that Ghostbusters is bigger than any one component. Although Billy was the lead and contributed to it in a massive way, along with myself, Harold (Ramis) and the director and Sigourney (Weaver), the concept is bigger than any one individual role.”
The actor also talked a bit about the story line of Ghostbusters 3, confirming that a younger crop of Ghostbusters will be prominently featured. “The promise of Ghostbusters 3 is that we get to hand the equipment and the franchise down to new blood. My character, Ray, is now blind in one eye and can’t drive the Cadillac. He’s got a bad knee and can’t carry the packs. Egon is too large to get into the harness. We need young blood and that’s the promise. We’re gonna hand it to a new generation. We want to go into production in the spring, I hope.”
As far as new cast members for this young crop of Ghostbusters, Dan Aykroyd does have one actor in mind. “I like this Matthew Gray Gubler from the Criminal Minds show, but we’ll be casting. We’ll see everyone who wants to do it. It will be three guys and a young woman.” (With thanks to Coming Soon for transcribing the interview)
