At Disney’s fan convention, D23, over the weekend, some of the most interesting info to be released was about Monsters University, Pixar’s planned prequel to Monsters Inc., which is scheduled to hit cinemas summer 2013. For a start it was confirmed Billy Crystal and John Goodman will be back as Mike and Sully (and have already been in the recording studio), and Steven Buscemi will return as the nefarious Randall Boggs.
The prequel, which takes the characters back to their studying days, will also feature the voices of Dave Foley (who played Flick in A Bugs Life), Julia Sweeny, Joel Murray and Peter Sohn (who was also Emile in Ratatouille). However what parts they’ll play isn’t known at the moment.
Director Dan Scanlon also spoke about the plot, and revealed that although they’re great friends in Monster’s Inc., Mike and Sully were enemies from a very young age, and are extremely annoyed when they discover they’ll both be in the same class in university. At that point, they both want to be scarers – the top job there is the monster universe – and are competing for the role.
At the event, concept art was also shown off, with Mike and Sully both looking considerably younger and slimmer than we saw them in the previous movies, along with numerous other new monsters and the campus (which is described as a monster mix of Harvard and MIT). Hopefully Disney will release some of those pics properly soon, but in the meantime, here’s an image Disney sent us of Billy Crystal and John Lasseter at the event.
