It seems Johnny Depp is heading into comic book territory, as GK Films has acquired the rights to the Image Comics title The Vault for Depp to produce, according to Variety. GK Films is a relatively new company that’s building it’s reputation by working closely with select actors and directors, and backing the development of movies they want to do.
The company was behind The Tourist, and since then has helped Angelina Jolie get her directorial debut off the ground, as well as backing Depp’s upcoming Dark Shadows. It would seem to be a good idea, but the big studios got themselves into a lot of trouble a few years back, by signing rich development deals that allowed actors to do whatever they wanted to – with the result being a lot of movies the actors loved but which no one wanted to see. Hopefully GK Films can avoid that.
The Vault comic book was written by Sam Sarkar, who is an executive at Johnny Depp’s Infinitum Nihil production company (as always in Hollywood, it’s who you know). The story revolves around a group of divers who discover a bizarre sarcophagus deep in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Nova Scotia. They soon discover that an evil, demonic force has been unleashed after finding the cryptic tomb.
Johnny Depp will produce The Vault, although there’s no word on whether he’s eyeing this as a possible starring vehicle. The first issue of The Vault, a three-issue mini-series, hit the comic book shelves this week.
