Doctor Who has certainly ensured there’s a lot of interest around Karen Gillan, who plays companion Amy Pond. Earlier this year she was cast in David Baddiel’s Romeo & Brittany, a time-travelling take on Shakespeare’s tale, which would have seen 21st Century New Jersey colliding with 13th Century Italy. However that’s been stuck in development, and so now she’s signed up for the indie romance, Not Another Happy Ending, according to Screen Daily.
She’ll appear opposite Emun Elliott and Martin Compston in the movie, which is about a beautiful but eccentric writer of miserable, but best selling fiction (Gillan) whos blocked on her latest novel since she became successful and happy. In a bid to break her block, her publisher (Elliott) sets about trying to make her life more miserable, only to realise he is in love with her.
John McKay (Crush) will direct, with production planned for late this year and early next. The helmer says, We have two of the newest, hottest, sexiest pair of lead actors out of Scotland. Just right for the kind of quirky, romantic indie movie Not Another Happy Ending is set to be.
It could be okay, but I doubt it’s going to propel Gillan into the Hollywood spotlight. Personally we’re waiting for Arthur Darvill to get a bit more buzz, as he’s a rather unappreciated part of the latest incarnation of Doctor Who. He’s probably the best thing about the show as Amy’s long-suffering other-half, Rory, but tends to get rather ignored.
