After the stick he got from all quarters for I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry, you’d have thought Adam Sandler might have stayed away from anything even remotely gay for fear of being pilloried again. However, according to Movieweb he’s toying with the idea of remaking Three Men And A Baby and giving the whole thing a polyamorous gay spin.
There’s been talk of a remake for a while, as well as a straight sequel reuniting Guttenberg, Selleck and Danson for Three Men And A Bride. However they’ve both been stalled for a while and so apparently Sandler has stepped in. Movieweb says he saw an episode of MTV’s Real Life that featured three gay men attempting to bring a fourth into their relationship, and that sparked the idea for the new take on Three Men And A Baby.
Sandler isn’t likely to star though, with that ‘honour’ going to David Spade, Chris Rock, and Rob Schneider instead, who all seem to be up for the idea and may also contribute to the screenplay.
While the premise is a potentially interesting idea, it’s tough to see this ever happening. After all, Three Men And A Baby is owned by Disney, and while you can imagine them greenlighting a remake featuring a gay couple and their straight mate raising a baby (or even a gay couple and single gay man), it’s tough to imagine them okaying a movie where three men – or in fact three people of any gender – are all in a presumably sexual relationship together. It’d be asking for fire from all angles, with the anti-gay mob crying it was Disney trying to destroy society, while even the pro-gay side may have problem with how it presents modern gay relationships.
But hey, maybe Sandler can force it through – I doubt it though. And as Movieweb’s story is rather light on story, it also wouldn’t be shocking if there were more fiction than fact to this whole thing.
